I suppose it should not bother me so much that hessians are so often thought of as unenlightened half-wits. But, it does. Where punk and post-punk movements seem to have found a kind of academic legitimacy, metal and its supporters have been cast into a more recondite role. It is often thought that the underground aesthetic does not apply to metal, since most of the music deemed 'metal' in the mainstream (Disturbed, et al.) is painfully over-produced crap made specifically for mass consumption. Also, genius metal is still metal, and the casual music fan might fail to recognize innovation if exposed to it in the form of bands like Gorguts, simply because of its loudness and packaging. The image of hessians tends to put off the normals, as well.

All that said, perhaps this 'academic legitimacy' is a reason that the hardcore scene has been manipulated and squeezed dry. What was once a youth rebellion movement geared to specific socio-political revolt has become completely commercialized and turned into a pointlessly misanthropic fog of rage with no particular enemy in sight. Youthful angst dissipates ('Sometimes selling out is growing up!'). The most extreme forms of metal, on the other hand, never faded away because death and black metal are not angry. The article touches upon this. All the examples provided in the final paragraph are of bands whose themes transcend the temporal. Metal is rebellion, but not necessarily a youth rebellion. It is not music that is grown out of for anyone truly immersed in the culture.
