Aeternus
...and so the night became
[Hammerheart]

Such power! There's nothing incredibly flashy here, but the band understand how to create triumphant and powerful death metal. Well, actually, this has a heavy black metal influence as well, but at the core is pure death metal. I guess my best comparison would be if the lads in Bolt Thrower decided to play something a tad darker. Good stuff indeed.

I've never done an Aeternus review, which is strange, obviously. The demo was fairly simple dark sounding death metal. The mCD that followed that allowed me to dub them the 'dark metal Bolt Thrower', since that's what they (somewhat) sounded like. After that fine release, the band released an excellent (and lengthy) CD. Finally, we have their second (and excellent) new full length.

Solid, thick sounding guitar bits, tight and simple drumming, deep and powerful vocals (dark and doomy, and at times raw and raspy), and the occasional usage of synth (to pepper, not drench)….and acoustics make this a varied album indeed. Obviously the main root behind this music is to create epic, impressive metal. And they succeed quite nicely (indeed!).

This is quite the appealing album. Production is solid, the disc is encased in a digipak (one of those buggers that cracks and looks nasty if you don't treat it like a newborn), and the layout is great. This is a fine album for sure, and should be checked out by one and all. It utilized so many different style of metal that it can actually appeal to a very wide audience.
