Abyssum
Thy Call
[Southern Hellish]

There's something about this that I enjoy. The music is dark, gloomy, rather slow, and quite atmospheric. The vocals are nothing more than high-pitched screams (and that's it, the vocalist only screams; no spoken parts, 'grim' vocals, death grunts…just scream after scream…and it sounds good!), one could even compare them to Cradle of Filth, but they work here for some reason. This isn't gothic music at all, it's just brooding and well-done black metal filled with atmosphere. Keyboards are the main instrument, and are occasionally toned down a little to let the fuzzy riffs, acoustic guitars, or vocals room to breathe.

Sure, the keyboard work is a little overdone at times, but still, the music is dreamy and atmospheric enough to enjoy. Simply put, this is so "nice" on the ears that it becomes appealing even after one listen. Everything here should really scream "cheese" or "trends", but there's nothing pseudo-black metal about this. Far from sick or twisted, "Thy Call" is a laid back CD that can be enjoyed by many an individual. And, as a style that personally dislike, I can't exactly give an answer as to "why"?

As a side note, the band tries to get some text across in broken English. I assume they are attempting to be another Satanic NS band, as the 'Heil Satan' all over the place coupled with the "Siel (sic.) Heil" makes me think that. For a pair of individuals that are so underground and evil though, why present pictures of yourselves hiding behind trees? Bizarre…

To sum everything up, I like this CD. And I don't know why. It's not hateful, it's not really METAL. I guess it's simply another brand of black metal that can appeal to many an individual, and it's as truly atmospheric as one can get, without being all-out goofy.
