For my money, the ultimate metal compilation. 15 (with a couple of
exceptions) of the most songs in the history of metal. 15 songs of
fear, doom, desolation, recorded in the aftermath of 60's hippy ignorance.
The birth of metal. (and indeed, the birth of doom.)
Black Sabbath at their prime, were simply awesome. Geezer Butler's
psychotic, pumping bass (and prophetic lyricism); Bill Ward...the
madman of the skins himself, how anyone could drum so frenetically
to such morbid, doomy music is often one of those "things to contemplate
next time I'm drunk/stoned"; the perpetually drunken nasal yell of
John "Ozzy" Osbourne; and the orgasmic meld of blues and proto metal,
which drips from the strings of Tony Iommi's guitar.
I won't review the songs, as someone else has already reviewed each
of the albums these songs are lifted from. Suffice to say, every song
is a killer. If you're able to, forego this compilation, and buy the
first six Black Sabbath albums NOW. If not, this is the ultimate
introduction to Metal's greatest legacy. Trust me....>:)
