Sleep
Jerusalem
[The Music Cartel/London]
A few years back now, Californian stoner-rock band KYUSS
put out an album which contained only 3 track indexes on
it, each track containing 3 songs. Why? Because they
felt the album need to be given unbroken attention, to be
truly appreciated...and for the record, they were absolutely
fucken right about that - that album is timeless.
Sleep have done pretty much the same thing...except I
find myself hating this album with a passion - due to boredom.
One "song" : broken into six tracks, looping a remarkably boring
doom riff over, and over and over a-fucking-gain; peppered with
some typically inane stoner-lyrics. (eg: "Drop out of life,
bong in hand...") Don't get me wrong, pot can do great things
for creativity, but it usually also turns you into a hippie
after a while.
Disclaimer : I did hear rumours about this album being
written/recorded purely to spite the record label (London Records)
that thought it was signing the next Nirvana or something...ala
Fudge-Tunnel/Columbia - maybe that explains it, who knows. At this
juncture though, I'd like nothing better than to toss the collective
Sleep into my bong, and torch them like the ovens of Auschwitz.
Songs about pot and Israel indeed. Fucking boring.
