"Signum of Hate" is quite possibly one of the largest improvements, during the course of a few years, that a band has ever produced. I really can't believe this is the same group that released the flat and all together lame "Caedes Sacrligae" album. "Signum of Hate" is a violent, hellbanging, and genius recording of (post) black metal with a VERY strong death/thrash feel. The album starts out in classic German thrash style: an orgy of noise leading into Kreator style CRUNCH. I can't believe how extraordinary some of these tracks are! "The Age of Antichrist", "Demon-(Mon)archy", "Hellhammer", "Sumerian Awakening"… ARGGHHH every track is a masterpiece!!! Impending Doom walk hand in hand with Desaster in perfecting this style!
Gone are the unnecessary keyboard parts. The pathetic riffs have been replaced with high paced guitar assaults that REQUIRE headbanging. The slower, more melodic tracks are mature and a pleasure to listen to. And the vocals! The fucking vocals! They roar, scream, wail, and spit out hate NON-STOP. I love bands that, knowing that they have a powerful vocalist, provide a barrage of vocals. PLUS, a few tracks like "Land of Burning Coffins" and "Forward to Golgotha" have some really exceptional King Diamond clone vocals. Who's doing these? Rather hard to tell with the long list of background vocalists.
This album blows my fucking mind! I guess the group was to have included "Chapel of Ghouls" and "Dethroned Emperor" as bonus tracks, but they aren't on this CD (sadly are listed in the credits - apparently on the LP?)…
I can't compare "Signum of Hate" to any other post-black metal bands employing a death-thrashing atmosphere (especially in some of the riffs). Impending Doom have simply come up with one of the finest heavy metal albums I've heard this year. PURE fucking metal at one hundred fucking percent!!
