Atheist
Piece of Time
[Death Records/Music for Nations]

The debut album of perhaps one of the most underrated death metal bands in history.

Atheist once stood up along with bands like Death, Nocturnus, and Cynic who introduced jazz and prog into death metal. Sadly along with Nocturnus and Cynic, their albums quickly went extinct (well not extinct, they could be found if you looked hard enough).

Piece of Time is a milestone of metal, where thrash, death, and jazz have all been combined brilliantly. The rhythm section is particularly potent. Roger Patterson was easily one of the best bass players who ever lived, although he was killed in a car accident shortly after this album was released.

Luckily for metal fans, this album along with Unquestionable Presence and Elements have be re-released on Music for Nations

Highest recommendations for all fans of technical death metal.

Standout tracks: Unholy War, On They Slay, Piece of Time

Grade for those too lazy or illiterate to read the review: A
