Summoning
Dol Guldur
[Napalm]

With their second album SUMMONING had really impressed themselves into the black metal underground, but this third one was their greatest downfall for most listeners; yet for some it is the favorite so it’s not that simple. ”Dol Guldur” is the album where only few would still continue calling SUMMONING a black metal band – this is more about ambient gothicism and melodrama than any kind of darkness or satanism.

Tolkien atmospheres and influences are still full-scale there in the lyrics, concepts and compositions of the songs, but in comparison to the energy of ”Minas Morgul” this feels more removed from the actuality of experience into a comatose sleep.

There is a dreamy depth into this work, with it’s 10 minute simple tracks of melancholical interpretations of Tolkien poems. But at the center of this dream-world there is also a terrible pit of boredom and depression they almost completely succumbed to by their currently latest album, ”Stronghold”.
