Summoning
Stronghold
[Napalm]

SUMMONING, once one of my favorite bands, managed finally to do a really boring album.

”Stronghold” is full of pseudo-epical keyboards that do not remind me of Tolkien, they remind me of ”Gone With the Wind” soundtrack and widowed women standing in the wind as silhouettes against a sunset, melodramatic music playing in the background.

For those who don’t know, SUMMONING used to play otherworldly Tolkien black metal of a quality acclaimed by surprisingly many in the metal scene, it’s hard to find someone who actually dislikes their second album ”Minas Morgul”, which was the essence of fantasy metal.

”Stronghold” however is the essence of melodramatic Hollywood soundtrack music. Occasionally the keyboard sounds used here are so soft they would sound unnecessarily soft even in a gothic record! The grim vocals are still there and actually they have emphasized the guitars in the production more than the last time, but there is also a girlfriend of a member singing in there and overall this work you can hear adulthood, tiredness and lack of real imagination. They are still epic, yes, but now it is like to see hundreds of negro children running joyfully when freed from under the dominion of an evil tyrannical dictatorship; there is a part in the last song which reminds me of this kind of scene I saw in some movie once.
