Gorgoroth
Incipit Satan
[Nuclear Blast]

For those whom has no time to read whole review, overall rating is 2 out of 10.

I guess I wasn't only one not knowing what to expect after Gorgoroth's "Destroyer", their worst album so far, with some machine drums and sound effect shit. When I first saw this album and looked the songnames I was Horrified with a major capital H. Or what does these sound like (and remember, the band is Gorgoroth), "Unchain My Heart" and "When Love Rages Wild In My Heart", comparing to some old ones like "Possessed by Satan".

I'll go song by song through this one.

First song gave me my hope back, it starts out with a good and if I may say, a bit unusual riff, normal "blasting" drums and infernal screaming. After a while riff changes a bit and double bass crackling begins, this really sounds great. But then... music stops completely and some weird effects comes to ruin the whole thing, and then the song starts from the beginning. So there's two good riffs on this song, all others sounds like "had to make something there" and plus stupid sound effects in the middle. Again I start to get horrified, and not without a reason.

Second song, entitled "A World to Win", starts with some space sound effects you could imagine finding from The Kovenant's album, but not from Gorgoroth's, musically this song reminds me of Old Man's Child, but not even close as good. Main riff could be ripped from Bal-Sagoth.. doesn't even sound like Black Metal.

Third song, entitled "Litani til Satan", is mainly spoken deeply and I lost my interest (now don't get me wrong, clean vocals are good when they're made good. Best example would be Emperor's "With Strength I Burn"). Musically this is more in the old style which is good, but when the song has about two riffs, low-paced drums and clean vocals, this is as boring as it can get.

Fourth song, entitled "Unchain My Heart", starts with a stupid as hell piano intro, but grows into good sounding Black Metal, again more in the old vein, with semi-paced drums and screaming. After a while it starts to sound too cute, more sad than evil. And again at the end, the few good parts get repeated and that's it. Not good, not good at all.

Fifth song, entitled "An Excert of X" (which sounds an Emperor songname), has about minute some guitar noise at beginning, and after two minutes slow-paced drums come in and I'm about to fall in sleep. A dreamlike guitar "lead" on this one doesn't help, which actually gets repeated with same dull rhythm guitar all the way until the end. Booooooooring...

Sixth song, entitled "Ein Eim Av Blod Og Helvetesild", is so far best song without a doubt, and at last a good song. It's mainly normal "fast" blasting, some dark sounding but blurry guitars, and hateful screaming. But when there's already been four boring worthless songs before this, it doesn't help much. But it shows that Gorgoroth is still able to play Black Metal.

"Will To Power" is the title of seventh song. Starts with some sound effects and some bassdrum pounding. Fuck fuck fuck, why do they make shit like this? Effects change a bit with same fucking bassdrum kicking in same fucking way, some distorted vocal crap comes up every once a while. And then the "song" ends. So, an industrial track.. way to go Gorgoroth! There's only few things I hate more than industrial.

Last song, with a title ripped from Celine Dion's album, "When Love Rages Wild In My Heart".. and the song even sounds like she could have written this one and Gorgoroth just plays it with distorted guitars. Slow-paced drums, deep spoken/clean vocals.. and all other stuff you need to make official crap.

Last thoughts. I have lost words. Gorgoroth, one of the greatest (real) "True Norwegian Black Metal" bands, have gone straight to hel.. heaven(?). I'm not sure can I call this album Black Metal anymore. So stay away from this and check out Darkthrone's "Ravishing Grimness" which at least is Black Metal.
