Satyricon
Rebel Extravaganza
[Moonfog]

It's unreal how these once oh so fantastic true Norwegian blackmetallers turn into pointless crap, prime examples would be this one and Gorgoroth's "Incipit Satan". And I have a bad feeling this is not going to end here.

So, what Satyricon gives us with "Rebel Extravaganza" is what they call "modern" Black Metal. In this case meaning in most parts stupid boring riffing with LOTS of non-blackmetal influences, monotonous vocals (sometimes with distortion and I HATE THAT), partly decent hyperfast drumming which still can't keep up the interest. This album falls into misty oblivion at the second you press stop. I didn't remember even one goddam riff after I stopped listening this. There is only few dull guitar leads, nothing that you could remember. All I could remember was that Frost is one hell of a drummer.. but he should change band. Also many songs are way too long and makes this even MORE boring. Listening through the first song, about 11 minutes!, was like being 11 minutes in gas chamber.. sounds are ok on this, clean and clear, although the guitars sound too thin and.. machine-like(?).

It's understandable that bands get bored to play same old Black Metal year after year and that they want to develop, some do it well and some don't. Satyricon fails. For really good modern Black Metal check out Emperor's "IX Equilibrium", that's how it should be done!

Only song on this album that I might listen again is "Prime Evil Renaissance".
