Gods Tower
Canticles
[Independent]

Gods Tower's "experimental demo" recorded in 1994 would mostly interest the band's completists. Five songs, three of which ("Beyond Praying," "Seven Rains Of Fire" and "Mysterious") were later included in "The Eerie" and "The Turns" CDs. The only real differences between these versions is the demo's poorer production values and the band's less energetic playing.

The remaining two tracks is where experimentation comes in. The title track is a lengthy song where all guitars do, in fact, sound like bagpipes. Well, somewhere between a bagpipe and an oboe, but definitely very cool. The vocals are all spoken word, narrating a story about creation of the world and how Christianity suppressed the ancient gods. Very good piece actually, except that Leslie Knife's broken English somewhat detracts the overall feeling. You can actually hear the man stumble several times while reciting the text. Still a worthy song, though. The remaining track "Praise Of Sun" is a shorter, but decent piece sung in Belarusian, or maybe even ancient Belarusian - I am not really sure, but I wish they would do it more often - with the same bagpipe-like guitar sound.
