The Craving

A mediocre album. Now I know why Megadeth fans didn't scream to the gods that this 1996 release didn't get enough airplay. Guitarist Dave Mustaine solely wrote most of the music, lyrics for 4 songs, co-wrote lyrics for 3 more, with vocalist Lee Ving writing the remaining 4.
Right off the bat I will tell you unless you like actual "singing" like St.Vitus, The Obsessed, Deep Purple you will be disappointed. Lee Ving's vocals have a bit of a hardcore snarling/ shouting quality. A bit.
"Day The Music Died", "Voices", "Nothing is Something" are cool because they sound like Megadeth outtakes (like subdued Rust in Peace or Countdown to Extinction tracks). "Voices" sure sounds like one of the last tracks on Countdown.
"The Creed" starts off Sabbathy (with harmonica!) before kicking into staggard/ stoner quicksilver. Easily my favourite song.
"Designer Behaviour" (as well as carbon copies "My Town" and "Hearts Will Bleed") sort of sounds like early Metallica (Dave's old band) riffing on catchy oldschool punk/hc.
"No Pain" sounds like Take No Prisoners so, obviously it makes me put on a mean face and wish I had more Newcastle!! Argh! I eat metal for breakfast!
Last track "Roadman" displays one of the best riffs. Imagine a lightning fast bizzaro-like bastard of a riff, like AC/DC's 'Riff Raff' played on crack!!
Overall, there's a sense of something missing on this 40 minute cd. I guess I enjoy it because:
A) I imagine Mustaine singing these songs, even the stupid ones
B) I used to really like punk/hc and St.Vitus
C) This is a Grade "C" album. Average. Like me.
The Japanese import I heard had about 3-5 bonus tracks. Short 30 second/ one minute instrumental jams inbetween songs. Unless YOU HAVE TO hear everything Megadave plays (or shits out lately, as old rattleheads are probably thinking), buy this used, if at all. This side project is/was as heavy, if not more than, as the 'Risk' or 'Cryptic Writings" albums.
