In Memory Of Celtic Frost
[Dwell]

Tribute albums of Metal bands like Celtic Frost usually contain a few badly attempted songs, trying to clone the original vocals. Then there are the covers that utilise a death or Blackmetal vocal style and they usually suck. As well as the aforementioned types of songs there are sometimes some good covers as well, as is the case of this particular tribute. With a band like Celtic Frost that has influenced many extreme acts (music wise) The Hardcore vocals sound appropriate and, ironically the song that is originally the most Hardcore (Triumph Of Death) is sung by a woman and sounds softer (Shittier) by comparison. Speaking of Hellhammer Why are there only two Covers of this mighty band? This should have been a tribute to Hellhammer with a few Frost covers and better bands (Fenriz has said many a time how Hellhammer influenced his song writing is, a Darkthrone cover would have killed) because Hellhammer never released cold lake and weren't so subtle with lyrical matters dealing with the occult. Btw I read somewhere Tom said that King Diamond's (Mercyful Fate's) Lyrics were too Satanic. What a Fucking ridiculous statement. I won't go into how I feel about Tom because I won't look like much of a Frost fan then. So with that said I've reviewed this album Track By Track.

1. Morgion - Innocence and Wrath/The Usurper
Innocence and Wrath? It annoys me having to skip through a minute of boring Shit. As for the Usurper this is a good cover and I like the way when it's time to sing 'are whispered in the wind' Jeremy Reto growls a little higher. This is a better idea than bringing in a bitch like Tom did.

2. Enslaved - Procreation (Of The Wicked)
I don't know much about Enslaved bust the songs I've heard of theirs mostly suck and could be cut in half with better effect. One thing I did notice though is the singer who does a fucking excellent job screaming. His style has, for this song been changed. I hated this at first but now I don't it mind so much. The vocalist, however has a lisp. A good track that took me some time to like.

3. Slaughter - Dethroned Emperor
I can see why this band split up because they have the shittiest singer I've ever heard. This fact alone completely ruins a good song.

4. Mayhem - Visual Aggression
Maniac sounds like he did on Deathcrush. I think this is a wicked style and somewhere in between the recording of this and Wolf's lair Abyss this style turned to the Shit we are presented with today. This is the best thing the'New'(Call them true you're just kidding yourself) Mayhem ever recorded.

5. Inner Thought - Morbid Tales
One my favorite Frost tracks is covered to perfection. Excellent Vocals and a drum machine that actually sounds good.

6. Sadistic intent - Return to the Eve
An okay track I suppose. The vocals kinda suck and the band photo made me laugh. Sadistic Intent are another one of those Death/Black bands doing a style of music that most of the time sucks.

7. Cianide - Dawn of Meddigo
Slow and boring. Vocals aren't very good either. Next.

8. Divine Eve - Visions of Morality
This gets better towards the end but I usually skip it.

9. Grave - Mesmerized
Dodgy singing ruins this track. I didn't mind the original track and find it to be a lot better than this one.

10. Apollyon's Sun - Babylon fell
What's the point of this? Half of this band are previous Celtic Frost membersand one of them is Tom. You'd think they could have chosen a better(Earlier) track to cover and I'm not surprised the band wasn't happy with this. The book says 'Reworked with a 90's crunch metal edge'. I say a crap cover of a crap song.

11. Opeth - Circle Of The Tyrants
For a band I'm more than willing to admit I dislike, this sure is a good cover. This is better than obituary's cover and maybe even better than the original. I hate the classical influences and progressive music that Opeth themselves do but this is Possibly the best track on the album, Killer Vocals and the solo is perfect.

12. Closedown - Danse Macabre
10 minutes of Shit. The band a bunch of short haired faggots and all have gay names. What pisses me off the most though is that some fuckhead stuck the last three tracks together so I have to skip through this long, boring piece of Shit to get to the emperor track. This one wouldn't even be good on drugs.

13. Emperor - Massacra
Isahns vocals suck as usual but aren't bad enough to make this unlistenable. Actually I like this track a lot but I want to hate it.

14. 13 - Triumph of Death
First of all, this band has one male member and three chicks??!! FUCK THAT! how dare they cover a song like this!. To make matters worse one of the chicks is singing. Before I even heard this I knew that this fact alone would fuck this song up something chronic and what do ya know I was right. Vocals sound like a Constipated Dyke with balls. None of Tom's Agonised Screams are replicated and the amazing atmosphere of the original song is lost in this Pathetic cover. The best song Hellhammer ever recorded is turned to Shit and even the music is badly done. I heard Behemoth covered aggressor. That would have much more appropriate (I haven't heard it yet but anything is better than this track) to put on the cd. The only redeeming thing about this track is that if ya look at the band photo the two chicks to the right of the fella are quite attractive looking and it's my guess that the ugly one sings. A terrible and inappropriate ending to an otherwise great tribute album.
