Metal gig search

Metal gig search

I have noticed a lack of underground metal concert search capability on the web. We have some limited capability for searching large arena and stadium events and the big name entertainment these places may host, but this neglects underground metal.

Such a search function is lacking. What to do is just familiarize yourself with the local venues (and their websites) that play (sometimes) the music you enjoy and just check it every week or so.

Would it be worth researching this topic and trying to compile a list? Perhaps people can chip in with links to their own local scene rather than force a core of two people to do all the work.
Or if people know of any links in general.

such as metalupdate.com used to be good for dates but I wasn't too impressed with it last time I looked.

If anyone is interested, biolich is playing a show July 27 at the rockstar bar in brooklyn, ny:
http://collect.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.showDetails&Band_Show_ID=6591402&friendid=2817730

I suppose the most effective method of finding shows would be to create a section of the site where all of us can post upcoming shows that we happen to come upon.

All these venues are usually a mix, but there's almost always some Metal, Punk or Hardcore.

For Philadelphia:

North Virginia/Alexandria/Washington D.C:
http://www.jaxxroxx.com/ (one of the best venues on the east coast for metal)

Baltimore:

Feasibility Study

A search page for black, doom, death and classical shows without the excess clutter of entertainment bands and comedians was my thought. The main problem is getting scheduling input from the outside world.

Ideally a fan could search 3 months in advance for:

City, state, province, country
Specific private venue in a given city
Band or orchestra name
Music style black, doom, death, classical shows
Whatever combination of the above

Registration for e-mail alert of upcoming events based on user's search criteria is doable.

Well Lightning Rider made a start. I'm sure it is possible to create a script that will search the websites you ask and find keywords. But would that be more efficient that Google?

A benefit could be to have automated searches that (eg) daily look for non-moronic bands that are playing.  Automation means that you wouldn't have to waste time. If it finds a positive then it could either mail people on a list or perhaps appear within a newsfeed.

Like democratic voters, web bots cannot reliably filter out bad information.

Example: someone posts on a metal forum that they wish a given band would come to their local bar in August. The web bot, oblivious to context, would collect that as an actual schedule.

Data integrity is high priority for this, so honest human input is needed.
