Sometimes you know pretty explicitly what a composer intended.  Wagner, for instance, left incredibly detailed performance notes for the Ring Cycle (some of which were not physically possible at the time), which Solti followed verbatim in his version of the Cycle's four operas (which is why, in my opinion, Solti, who Hebrewed-up Beethoven in the worst way imaginable actually ends up with the best and most faithful Wagner renditions).
