Encyclopedia Dramatica Goes Limp

Encyclopedia Dramatica Goes Limp

I'm not a troll myself, but ED was a source of entertainment from time to time. Underneath all of their satirical angst was a bit of truth in certain articles, namely the racist, liberal, and anti-Christian pages. Anyway, ED is now known as Oh Internet:

Quote
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopedia_Dramatica#Relaunch_as_Oh_Internet:

On April 14, 2011, Encyclopædia Dramatica was replaced by Oh Internet, a "sanitized"[1] version of ED.[1] Sherrod DeGrippo's reasoning was that "Shock for shock’s sake is old at this point and we're looking forward to the future and how things are evolving... when you put user experience first, the language becomes highly important and that's what we’ve done." While Oh Internet has generated interest from social networks, many visitors to Encyclopædia Dramatica were displeased by the change and attacked the website's official Facebook fan page[21] with "hate messages and pornography".[1] Speculation arose that the clean was done to make Oh Internet more attractive for potential acquisition, as competing website Know Your Meme had been acquired by the Cheezburger Network.[1] The speculation was rebuffed by DeGrippo, indicating that the move had been planned for months before the KYM purchase.[22] DeGrippo further stated "I am not looking to sell the site. I am looking to have something that I, personally enjoy working on and using. Every project I'm involved in is for my own enjoyment and because I just want to do it. That's my motivation."[1]

The original content was made available as a torrent download, and several mirror sites were rapidly established.[23]

ANUS trolls have been outshined by these guys (especially without centralization such as that of the inactive Infoterror):

Reception
In the media

The website received mainstream media attention after Jason Fortuny used Encyclopædia Dramatica to post photographs, e-mails and phone numbers from one hundred and seventy-six responses to a Craigslist advertisement he posted in 2006, in which he posed as a woman seeking sexual encounters with dominant men.[5][8] The incident was addressed in a blog hosted at wired.com where the blogger proposes that Encyclopædia Dramatica may be the "world's lamest wiki".[24]

The website was known for serving as a platform for members of the group known as "Anonymous", making Encyclopædia Dramatica a "favourite target for critics, who accuse Anonymous of propagating hate."[15] Through its association with members of Anonymous, Encyclopædia Dramatica received incidental coverage when actions by members of the group led to the arrest of an alleged pedophile,[25] when they demonstrated against Scientology in London;[26][27] when a member of Anonymous broke into the e-mail account of former vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin,[28] and when a member of Anonymous claimed credit for an attack on the virtual Second Life headquarters of former presidential candidate John Edwards.[29] The convergence of Encyclopædia Dramatica with the anti-Scientology campaign of Project Chanology was noted by technology journalist Julian Dibbell.[30]

In January 2010, the Encyclopædia Dramatica article Aboriginal was removed from the search engine results of Google Australia, following a complaint that its content was racist.[31][32][33] A search on terms related to the article produced a message that one of the results has been removed after a legal request relating to Australia's Racial Discrimination Act (RDA).[34][35] In March 2010, it was reported that the Australian Human Rights Commission had notified the site by e-mail that according to Australian law, the article Aboriginal could be in breach of Sections 18C and 18D of its RDA.[6]

Awards

On December 16, 2008, Encyclopædia Dramatica won the People's Choice Winners category for favorite wiki in Mashable's 2nd Annual Open Web Awards, with wikiHow as the runner-up and Wikipedia coming in 3rd.[36]

Now that ED has become a mere memory to be downloaded via torrents, the hardcore trolls have all but disbanded. The prevalence of ANUS trolls implies that we still possess power to be unleashed (perhaps on other bands/fans, as it was on Gojira fans?) Although we can never own a Wikipedia page like ED, we could become the new face of Trolldom. It would gain new ANUS advocates, site hits, etc. in the end when infamy hits us. Hopefully, more exposure would lead to more activity within the ANUS sphere. People who take our theory seriously have what it takes to begin with (intelligence, competence, and lack of egalitarian bile), so anyone who mistakes us as trolls - only - will be sodomized with the rest of humanity.

It's too fucking early, and I don't truly know why I was compelled to post this.....I suppose seeing the Nu-Metal thread and DLA comments prompted the conception that trolling other websites is colossally more constructive than dicking around in your own bed.

ED was fantastic. I was convinced the Oh, Internet change was a meta-troll, but it's been about a month now and has yet to go away. RIP!

It didn't take long for someone to simply copy the site and start a new one. You can find the "new" ED at encyclopediadramatica.ch

But for years ED has been nothing more than a site for the uninitiated to catch up on memes they didn't know about. Such openness has killed the trolling scene from the inside, allowing people with no knowledge to suddenly be able pretend they're part of the gang (so called "newfags") During this process ED turned to shit anyway and lost its edge and eventually became more mainstream. Girlvinyl had been messing around with a worksafe version of the site for years anyway so unless you're retarded you could have seen this coming from a long way.

I think it's good that the old ED died. It pushes trolling more underground where it belongs. It's kinda weird if you're at a family party and suddenly you hear your aunt talking to other family members about memes and trolls.

That said, I don't think it's fair to compare anus.com to 4chan trolls. Both the methods and goals are different. 4chan trolls lack the capacity to see beyond the next three days and that's what eventually led them to the wrong kind of exposure. The kind of exposure they can't control themselves thus rendering them nothing more than a plaything for hipsters and the mainstream. Now look at Liturgy, they pretty much ripped off anus's intellectual approach to music but they were so obviously fake about it that everybody (apart from hipsters) saw through it and just laughed at them. The lesson here is: if you want to stay on top then make sure that what you are doing can't be copied by just everyone. Kinda like how Coca-Cola has kept their recipe secret since they existed.

Encyclopedia Dramatica went from a insider website to a gathering place for script kiddies and people with too much time on their hands to a site mostly visited by clueless people looking for quick entertainment while on their lunchbreak. In fact the whole "not-underground" trolling scene has been surpassed by sites such as knowyourmeme.com. I truly hope this will never happen to anus.com so it's a good thing that Prozak is such an everlasting fuck-up and antisocial nerd.

I barely know anything about ED, aside from reading a total of six or five articles. Some of it was horrid, and some was entertaining. ANUS trolls are generally very amusing (the better of them especially), such as the latest attack on Gojira. There are shitload of quality (read: foul and wretched) stories from anus.com to copy and paste -- I don't recall the URL off-hand though.

In addition, ANUS trolls will always be a "different breed", but I would like to see them be a little more aggressive. A for my opinion, someone does need to revive the Infoterror domain. That's certainly the most serious statement I'll make in this thread. As a relative newb to ANUS (I was sodomized about 8 months ago), I never experienced the "good old days" that I've read about, concerning trolling of course. According to the forum statistics, we are experiencing a positive growth here. A slight increase in quality trolling shouldn't be too much to ask.

I'm glad someone decided to re-open ED under a new domain. I know the creator of the original ED said "shock isn't entertaining anymore" but honestly I just think it's because a ton of crimes were aided by ED; the staff was probably under some sort of pressure.

Most of the articles are shit, but there are a select few which are quite hilarious. Such as this one.

the first step to better organized trolling is setting up an irc network, or at least a channel on an existing network for ANUS trolls to dwell and discuss new projects.

That and a wordpress directory for documenting planned attacks and meetings on IRC.

4chan, anonymous, wikileaks, and internet culture in general are crap. They never were great, but now it's just embittered losers chanting democratic slogans.

4chan and Encyclopedia Dramatica are the most stark embodiments of crowdism in the modern age. They may have a sense of community, but a sense of community is a means to an end; mobs of pedophiles and nerds will never understand this -- nor any mobs, for mobs are ultimately disorganized, and chiefly interested in using the herd structure for their own selfish, masturbatory purposes.

Here's a rule of thumb that generally holds true: If you say something in one realm of reality that provides a false sense of power, can be recited by anyone on Earth, and will never be said by you outside of that realm, you're probably a coward. 4chan is the Marquis de Sade to ANUS' Immanuel Kant.

And no, I'm not mad, bro.

Bingo. On the nose.

ED was funny as a wikipedia satire, for a few pages; there was some real talent misapplied there.

I wish we could harness these people toward solving actual problems, but that takes real effort outside the computer room, broskis.

i would contrast 4chan meme wankery and assorted basement dwelling worthlessness with the positive trolling of the GNAA, whose most recent trolling endeavor i found quite hilarious and productive in terms of rattling the status quo consumerist culture and media.

http://gawker.com/5559346/apples-worst-security-breach-114000-ipad-owners-exposed
(goatse security being a subsidiary of the GNAA)

i think all ANUS dwellers have the proper anti-establishment mindset, and a lesser amount the proper intelligence, to pull off some of these types of 'culture jamming' feats of technological trickery. i'm not a particularly technologically inclined type of person, but i'm sure there are people on this website who have strong computer skills. i'm also under the impression that a lot of people here don't often leave their bedrooms. with internet trolling, you can invoke the spirit of loki and do something productive, while still getting to be a basement dwelling little shit who's afraid to go out into the world and make something of yourself! what better way to be put to good use, instead of spending your time debating the legitimacy of burzum's latest album and cumming in your pajama pants?

anus should promote internet trolling with increased fervor, in my opinion.

If you can get beyond the mindless amounts of pornography, gore, filth, cancer, racism, rate me threads, pranks, and forced memes, you will realize (unsurprisingly) that Anonymous is comprised of young men who are sexually frustrated and lonely.

Some of their jokes are funny, some of these guys seem talented, but they lack a real political platform and good leadership. Anonymous as a technical tool for jokes and third class liberalism is doomed to failure.
