What are some good, lesser known ambient bands?  More specifically, Black metal that is atmospheric, yet not overdone in the vein of Burzum.

Try Sort Vokter.

Ildjarn's main project is not ambient, though it bears significant ambient influences. Hardangervidda, of course, is plain ambient, but it is extraordinarily good.

Try Far Away From the Sun from Sacramentum. Their sweeping Swedish guitar riffs should place you in the zone you are looking for. And if you can handle fucked up production, Wanderings from I Shalt Become will do the job just as well...but with a sound very similar to early Burzum.

Almost fogot: early Demoncy. From Joined in Darkness and before.

The Esker demo isn't a bad entry either.

I'd try:
Slayer
Massacra
Gehenna
Behemoth (1st album)
Incantation
Burzum
I Shalt Become
Immortal

Lately as far as having the originality but still holding the spirit of crushing black ambient metal, I would have to say Xasthur.

If you like quality most Summoning albums offer this.
