I'm basically in agreement with Prozak, although I would replace Filosofem with Det Som Engang Var. The second half of Filosofem is Dark Ambient.

To clarify my earlier "latecomer" comment, I was referring to Pure Blood Doom (released 1999), and not the band. I was trying to point out that a new album should have some new ideas, not just a shoddy rehash of the status quo or past legends. Right?

In all of any genre, there's a few that really nail what it is to be that genre, and these tend to be known to history while others are footnotes.

Definitive to me means "archetypal," or exemplary of what the genre was about, not necessarily a best of or list every album of.

I'd like to do a list for outsiders: how to understand metal music through its definitive acts.

In keeping with my retrogressive exploration of death metal, I've finally succumbed to heavy metal, in the form of Iron Maiden's Powerslave album (principally because they wrong a song on the theme of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner). Another band I swore I'd never like.

I had no idea the composition would be so imaginative.

anybody heard Adramelech's 2005 release?

I have, albeit only once or twice a little while ago. Seemed quite strong - a slightly streamlined yet still effective continuation of Adramelech's distinctive Demigod-derived sound. Recommended, though not particularly awe-inspiring.

I've finally succumbed to heavy metal, in the form of Iron Maiden's Powerslave album

A brilliant album, as I've said once before!  Infact, that was the "last" of the brilliant albums by Maiden.  The first 5 Iron Maiden albums are the definitive collection, everything else = mediocrity or  shit!

From what I've heard, Powerslave seems way better than killers. I've not listened to anything else.

Killers was the best of the Di'Anno era, which, for what it's worth, was a completely different direction than that which they turned to when Dickinson joined. However, I am partial to "Somewhere In Time" myself.
