Ancient - Trolltaar

Ancient - Trolltaar

People give me shit because I love early Ancient. That first album is great, and the lengthy EP after it is also brilliant. Musically simple -- true. But what isn't? All pop music, even the progressive bands, are simplistic droolers compared to a classical symphony. What's amazing is that it has a spirit that is pure metal, while the music embraces more than one mood; it's even happy sometimes, but with a sense of being doomed and yet rising to a point of power.

Over at another forum, someone came up with an interesting idea for the perpetual top ten lists. Don't list what you think you should list, but what you actually listen to. Of course, everyone ignores that, but the point is well-made. I listen to Trolltaar more than most black metal bands because it's ambitious, beautiful, interesting and poetic. I put it in with a list of stuff I always pick up because it's killer:

1. Beherit - Engram, Electric Doom Synthesis, or Drawing Down the Moon
2. Incantation - Onward to Golotha or the subsequent EP
3. Bolt Thrower - IVth Crusade and For Victory
4. Graveland - Anything FTVOB and before
5. Summoning - Dol Guldur
6. Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger and Under a Funeral Moon
7. Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
8. Deicide - Legion and Once Upon the Cross
9. Demilich - Nespithe
10. Atheist - Piece of Time
11. Gorguts - Considered Dead
12. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
13. Slayer - everything up through Hell Awaits + South of Heaven
14. At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
15. Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes

That's a partial list. I don't listen to stuff that I think I "should" listen to, as much:

1. Slayer - Reign in Blood
2. Gorguts - Obscura
3. Atheist - Unquestionable Presence (probably just burned out on this one)
4. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden
5. Anything Metallica after the first two albums
6. early Bolt Thrower
7. Grindcore
8. Hardcore
9. Entombed
10. Deicide - Deicide

This is subject to change at any moment, but interesting to observe my self (which I don't believe in) and to see what comes out of it. Fucking animal.

That's an interesting idea, I wonder if we might see any patterns in the albums we constantly find ourselves listening to. I love In the Nightside Eclipse, but find myself listening to it rarely;

In no order of preference:

1) Sacramentum - Far Away From The Sun
2) Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten, Breeding the Spawn and Pierced from Within
3) Therion - Beyond Sanctorum and Symphony Masses
4) Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
5) Immolation - Dawn of Possession and Here in After
6) Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Transilvanian Hunger
7) Varathron - His Majesty at the Swamp
8) Summoning - Minas Morgul and Oath Bound
9) Graveland - Thousand Swords and The Celtic Winter
10) Gorguts - Obscura
11) Infester - To the Depths (In Degradation)
12) Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract and Non Serviam
13) Bolt Thrower - For Victory
14) Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus
15) Necromantia - Scarlet Evil Witching Black
16) Burzum - Det Som Engang Var
17) Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and Pure Holocaust

Yet I hold other stuff that I don't listen to more often in higher esteem than some of these albums. Enslaved, HLTO, Demoncy, Profanatica, the aforementioned Emperor etc. etc. Looking at the list now I guess there are some common identifiable threads, but I'll leave that to others to decide for themselves. It's a rather uncontroversial list.

I suppose that my 'most frequently listened to' list tends to roughly coincide with what I think I 'should' listen to. These are the albums I consistently come back to, in no particular order:

1. Slayer - First three albums.
2. Emperor - ITNE
3. Demilich - Nespithe
4. Deicide - First three
5. Autopsy - Mental Funeral
6. Carnage - Dark Recollections
7. Entombed - LHP
8. Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum
9. Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine, An Ending In Fire
10. Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
11. Sinister - Hate, Cross the Styx
12. Luciferion - Demonification
13. Incantation - OTG, Mortal Throne
14. Blasphemy - Fallen Angel Of Doom
15. Malevolent Creation - Retribution

However, these albums make up a fairly small portion of what I typically listen to over the course of a week or so. I usually spend my time either scouring the past for hidden gems, or closely analyzing albums that I know are flawed, but contain elements that intrigue me for whatever reason. I do a lot of the latter while on long commutes. Last week I spent a lot of time analyzing various Nile albums and wondering if something could have been salvaged out of that mess. The jury is still out, on that one, but it isn't looking good. The week before that, I listened to a lot of mid era Immortal and concluded that The Heart of Winter is actually a really good album. Time will tell.

^ I really like At the Heart of Winter, too.  And Battles in the North.  I am a big sucker for Immortal, though.  Ancient Trolltaar and Det Glemte Riket are outstanding as well, I don't know who wouldn't like those.

Here's some that's maybe not the best of the best, but that I listen to a lot:
1.  Immolation - Dawn of Possession.  This honestly might be my favorite death metal album ever.
2.  Unleashed - Shadows in the Deep.  The Venom cover right in the middle of this album sucks, though.
3.  Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells.  A classic.
4.  Obliveon - From this day Forward.  Technical but atmospheric
5.  Obliveon - Nemesis.  Nothing totally amazing but utterly consistent and rock solid.
6.  Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness.  I listen to this as much as Blessed are the Sick
7.  Adramelech - Psychostasia/The Fall/Seven.  For some reason this reminds me of drawing monsters as a kid.
8.  Mortuary - Blackened Images.  Wild west death metal.
9.  Supuration - The Cube.  This grew on me very quickly.
10.  Sacramentum - The Coming of Chaos.  I like this better than say Uncanny or Unanimated.

An interesting exercise. Here's what I came up with.

1. Therion - Beyond Sanctorum
2. Immortal - Blizzard Beasts
3. Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
4. Summoning - Nightshade Forests
5. Emperor/Enslaved - Hordane's Land
6. Immolation - Here In After/Close to a World Below
7. Infester - To the Depths...
8. Ildjarn/Nidhogg
9. Eucharist - A Velvet Creation
10. Mutiilation - Remains of a Dead, Ruined, Cursed Soul
11. Deicide - Legion
12. Beherit - Electric Doom Synthesis
13. Suffocation - Human Waste/Effigy of the Forgotten
14. Absu - Tara
15. Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract

Some masterpieces, some not. I've found that I enjoy listening to more epic music like Burzum and Emperor (aside from the early stuff) less frequently as I get older, although I enjoy it more and more.

Immortal is fucking great, although I definitely gravitate toward BB as far as their mid-period stuff goes.

Immortal is fucking great, although I definitely gravitate toward BB as far as their mid-period stuff goes.

I am the same way. When digging through my records, Pure Holocaust is in front of Blizzard Beasts and I always think to myself " OH! such a fucking great album!", then I put it aside then I see Blizzard Beasts and I always end up putting that one on instead.  Does this mean BB is a better album? No but it is great any time, any day, anywhere.  For me Pure Holocaust is one of those records I put on maybe once a month, when the moon is full.

These albums rule my speakers:

Judas Priest - Stained Class( every friday night)
Slayer - Show No Mercy + Reign In Blood ( everytime I drive)
Mercyful Fate - Melissa ( every friday night )
Deicide - Legion ( when Slayer isnt playing in the truck )
Havohej - Dethrone The Son Of God ( Last in the rotation after Slayer and Deicide)

I don't think my listening habits comply with such a list, but I have a pretty big habit of every time I am trying out a new metal album and finding myself getiing pretty bored with it, I take it out and put in A Blaze in the Northern Sky.

That happened with Dimmu Borgir's earlier albums which I only this week gave a chance. Darkthrone played loudly most of the week.

I don't know if I can actually name 10 albums if we're going with the "stuff you actually do listen to" criteria.

Best attempt:
Morbid Angel- Altars of Madness, Blessed Are the Sick
Autopsy- Severed Survival, Mental Funeral
Profanatica/Havohej- Enemy of Virtue, Disgusting Blasphemies Against God, Profanatitas De Domonatia, Dethrone the Son of God
Immolation- Failures for Gods
Incantation- Onward to Golgotha

Re: Ancient - Trolltaar

Stuff I actually listen to these days:

Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion/Morbid Tales/Satanic Rites
Autopsy - Mental Funeral/Severed Survival
Black Sabbath - first five albums
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum
Incantation - Onwards to Golgotha
At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is ours
Varathron - His Majesty at the Swamps
Massacra - Final Holocaust
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick/Altars of Madness
Burzum - first two albums
Darkthrone - Soulside Journey/Goatlord (instrumental version usually)
Sepultura - first five releases
Slayer - first five releases
Sinister - Cross the Styx/Diabolical Summoning

Metal hardly makes up 20% of what I listen to these days, the rest is just Bach with occasional Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn.

Stuff I 'should' listen to more according to what consensus says is good or I know is on some level genuinely commendable, but that doesn't seize me with a great urge to listen to it like it maybe once did:
Darkthrone's black metal material
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Immolation after the first album
Burzum - Filosofem
Death - Human
Cynic - Focus
Iron Maiden
Ambient music

All I have to do is look at my last.fm to see what I've actually been playing the most in recent years:

1. Immortal - Pure Holocaust
2. Summoning - Oath Bound
3. Beherit - Engram
4. Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
5. DRI - First two albums
6. Averse Sefira - Last two albums
7. Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
8. Cryptic Slaughter - Convicted
9. Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun
10. At The Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
11. Immolation - Everything up to and including Unholy Cult
12. Graveland - The Celtic Winter
13. Bathory - The Return
14. Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing
15. Demoncy - Joined in Darkness
16. Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
17. Slayer - everything up to and including South of Heaven
18. Bolt Thrower - For Victory
19. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
20. Emperor - S/T, In The Nightside Eclipse

This is strictly by the numbers. I can easily understand how a well worked out 'best' list would be very different. For instance, where's Amorphis, Therion, and Dismember?

Re: Ancient - Trolltaar
January 28, 2012, 01:30:45 AM
I'll be even more specific:

burzum - ea, lord of the depths
disembowelment - your prophetic throne of ivory
darkthrone - skald av satans sol/graven takeheimens saler
enslaved - vetranott/midgards eldar
asphyx - vermin
celtic frost - procreation of the wicked
emperor - i am the black wizards/inno a satana
amorphis - exile of the sons of uisliu
burzum - key to the gate
summoning - kor
at the gates - raped by the light of christ/the break of autumn
gorgoroth - maaneskyggens slave
graveland - thurisaz
dismember - and so is life
beherit - the gate of nanna
autopsy - service for a vacant coffin
immortal - the sun no longer rises
graveland - at the pagan samhain night

instant gratification once you've figured it out

I've always enjoyed Ancient's earlier works.  True, they ended up being Cradle of Filth's downie cousins, but extra-contextuality requires that we ignore the more recent mistakes of the once-mighty (or, you know, we could just KILL A COP).

I listen to way too much of the following...

Slayer's SNM -> SOH (excluding RIB)
At The Gates' TRITSIO
Morbid Angel's AOM and BatS
Suffocation's PFW
Beherit's EDS
My Bloody Valentine's Loveless
King Crimson's Islands
Yes' Close to the Edge
Enslaved's VV
Summoning's Oathbound and LMHSYF
Necromass' ACL
Necromantia's SEWB
Atheist's UP
Dismember's LAES
Entombed's LHP
Immolation's HIA
Bathory's BFD and HH

Why is this a "hey gaiz chk mah muzak tastez lol" thread?  These things shouldn't even exist on this board.

I listen to Ildjarn - Strength and Anger almost daily.

In between that:

HIM – Your Sweet Six Six Six
HIM – Heartache Every Moment
HIM – Right Here In My Arms
Negative – Won't Let Go
Demi Lovato - Skyscraper
Tokio Hotel - In Your Shadow (I can shine)
Black Veil Brides - Perfect Weapon
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Simple Plan - Untitled
Katy Perry – E.T. (feat. Kanye West)

I think these kinds of threads bubble up when leaders show enthusiasm.
