We have to always remember that we are a small piece of a huge timeline. Could it be that our conflict between thought and feeling is a transitional stage in our brain development as a species?
Jonathan Haidt has already discussed how political divisions are made by variables like empathy. Neuroscience could probably advance enough to look at a person's Dna and determine his political leaning.
What if transhumanists, and other people who have used their mind to create a whole alternate fantasy world are actually the next stage?
and god forbid, liberals? Same goes for escapists, hedonists, and the blissfully ignorant. They do seem to breed more. Just a thought.

Occam's Razor. The simplest reason is probably the right one.
Insanity, purely and simply.
Overpopulate the environment and a collapse will follow.
Set up a whole society that takes, while giving nothing back, and a collapse will follow.
Create fantasy worlds, and life becomes a fantasy. Nothing gets done. A collapse will follow.
People have reached a point where they take their survival for granted. A collapse will follow.

Here are the things that people need:
Survival: Food. Water. Shelter.
Beyond that: Companionship. A mate. Health.
Then it's luxuries; Comfort. Entertainment. Intoxicants.

The essentials need to come from somewhere. The sane understand this. The insane do not.
 The realist will contribute in whole, or in part to his own survival.
The fantasist will demand that all his desires are met, without contributing anything.

If anyone is going to survive, let alone evolve, it is going to be the realist.

Everyone has a model of the world inside their head. How closely it resembles reality is measuring stick of their character.

No, liberals naturally side with feelings and subjectivity.
some people can't follow anything except rationality.
And the ones in who are between the two extremes experience the conflict the most.
I'm postulating that it's in the genes because personalities are generally inherited.
For the longest time humans would need rationality and thought to survive, be inventive and brave the elements. Dumb people who put feelings first would die off because the environment was rough as hell. Evolution  gave us emotions to connect with our groups, mates and offspring, not to be SLAVES to it, running to buy some fast food everytime you feel a little sad.  
Liberalism stopped all that. It gave handouts to people who would have died off otherwise. Whole systems were based on compassion. Now we have lackadaisical hedonists happily breeding and having their needs fulfilled without doing much, outnumbering the thoughtful kind. All of them want to FEEL GOOD.  
We are weeding out rationality. Literally. Brains are becoming different.
