The new Sorcier Des Glaces album

The new Sorcier Des Glaces album
December 20, 2006, 03:06:24 AM
Open topic for discussion of their new output, found via a link in the Audiofile section.

I won't lie, it has it's flashes of brilliance reminiscent of the debut, but overall, Robitaille is focusing far too much on instrumental aesthetic this time around, and not enough on what is being communicated with said aesthetic.

I'm not all that enthused by this release. Parts of it make my spirit soar, but they're few and far between.

Thoughts?

After my first listen, my first impression is about the same.

To elaborate briefly on the aesthetic point - a few parts of it reminded me of Pink Frothy AIDS: they sounded very beautiful, leaping out of the composition quickly into eager ears, but without making a deep impression of expressivity.
You call yourself free? Let me hear your ruling thoughts, and not that you have escaped bondage. Are you one who deserved to escape from it?

Disappointing, but considering this was recorded only a year after Snowland, I'd like to hear what he is capable of doing with a new album.

The intention is good, but the technique is bad. The arpeggio strumming like Dissection stills the atmosphere in a stagnant way. The quality of the music is B+. Graveland wrote better melodies although simpler. The quality of the compositions as a whole is probably A or higher. I am intrigued and enjoy this album.

Free downloads. Between these two, I have enough to listen to for this week.

I agree mostly with Blaphbee; while this album shows signs of brilliance in composition, breaking the boundaries of blockhead black metal and instead opting for a free and classical-inspired structure wholly based on experience and emotion, the communication through melodic aesthetic sometimes falls short. I'm also uncertain whether the slow breaks in the middle sections serve a higher purpose, than mere self-reflection. I also think he could have developed the piano sections a bit more, but that's me whining, perhaps after having gone through a series of Jewish symphonies by Gustav Mahler.

Overall, one of the better albums released this year, and definitely one of the few black metal artists I still think are worth praising.

After a second listen:

Certainly not without its faults, as some of us have picked out. But we shouldn't lose perspective and become solely critical - this is still a very good black metal album, and it goes without saying that it's miles ahead of anything the crowd churns out. I agree with Alexis that this band is still deserving of notice and praise.

That's so true. I keep comparing it to Deathspell Omega, and I think it's better. DSO is much slicker but less real. The constant acoustic-style strumming makes me think of Dissection, but less technically advanced.

Freshest shiznizzle since "Fear of a Black Planet," I think, but the Dissection parts make me cold in my vitals. Still very glad it's not GBK...

Musical quality: B+
Artistic content: A
Form and function: A

I'll take this over everything but a few bands since 1996: it has spirit and it aims for something higher than participation.

It's still possible to order "Snowland", the first masterpiece from this artist, by contacting him through the MyAIDS account:

It costs $15 (= no porn magazine this week).

-  And it's worth it.
