Orgins of the Blues?

Orgins of the Blues?

Over the years on this forum I've seen claims such as 'the blues originally derived from European Folk music,' and I also read somewhere that The British 'created the Blues in the 17th Century.' I've been trying to research these claims, but it's a bit tricky. It seems to me that music historians hold tight to the idea that Blacks created genres such as Jazz, Blues, and Rock, and we are forever in dept to them, at the same time dismissing Classical as antiquated - it seems to be that deviations from Classical Traditions have led to the downward slope to the Non-Culture that currently exists, where "art" is about being hip(ster) and everything else is simply commerical. Ignore that last part first, and help me out with my primary question. Thanks! I want to get the truth of the matter.

The truth of the matter is that it doesn't matter.

Maybe you're right. But if I ask elsewhere, I'd get the Liberal response of, "of course Black people created all the music that we now enjoy! How dare you racist bastards question us!"

Well, I was going to say exactly that, but I decided not to at the last moment.
