Some great picks for an essential list, but far too big with too much shit for a best ever list.

Considerably better than the kind of lists mosts sites would have made. But too much pandering to the "hey it's somewhat obscure and therefore totally peerless!" crowd.

Maybe 5 of those albums are remotely obscure

Sweet, a lot of albums I haven't heard. Thanks dude.

Whoever made that list should be shot. Not mentioning Blessed are the Sick or fucking GORGUTS yet including Cannibal Corpse and other random crap is a crime to metal.

Altars >>>>>> Blessed.

Foreals.

But anyway, yeah I don't know why Cannibal Corpse is on there. Why's that Mortification album there? Why "Litany" and not one of Vader's first three? Why is Baphomet on there? Terrorizer is a grind band. Some major discrepancies.

Overall, I feel this list is great for an overall view of death metal, but as far as a "best EVER" list it falls short.

I may be the only one who feels this way, but I'd sure add the Zyklon discography to my "best-ever" list. Preferably "The Storm Manifesto" box set. The 1hr45min program I think plays better than each album separately, but if forced to choose I'd probably say "Aeon," but I'd rethink myself every day and probably edit the list.

Carcass Symphonies of Sickness !!!

That was a definite favourite of mine back in the school days, otherwise I find grindcore boring as all hell and I get ample amount of it in swedish death metal anyway.

Altars >>>>>> Blessed

i think that those albums are too distinct, and with different goals, that they can't really be compared...maybe only in a stylistic comparison.

Point taken. My issue with Blessed is the flat and uninteresting production, the incoherence of tracks 2 and 3 (they are unfinished/awkward) and the fact that most of the good songs are re-recordings. I'm comparing them on a personal taste level here.

From a wider scope, I would call Altars stronger because it is more logical in its execution. The songs make sense in sequence, the feral energy of the band as a unit is perfectly preserved, and the (perhaps unintentional) proto black metal influence really just pushes the album up to extraordinary heights. They flawlessly blended their inspirations together and produced an album which has stood the test of time strongly.

Agreed.

That's just fucking crazy talk right there :)

Not having information on the listening habits and influences of Morbid Angel (beyond the obvious stuff like Slayer and Possessed), I've always seen the slightly blackened feel of Altars as not so much them tapping into that early black metal as the bands of the early '90s taking perhaps more than they let on from MA. Not many death metal bands (especially American ones) were doing the whole fluid, phrasal method from 1989-1991.
