This FAQ describes how to rip MP3s and FLACs, share them through one-click file hosting services, and post links to the mp3 archives in the Audiofile section of this forum.

Before you begin, see the Ethics section.

I. Ripping

+ Exact Audio Copy (EAC)
+ Audiograbber
+ CDex v1.60
+ CDex 1.52

EAC provides the best rip, but can get "hung" on difficult CDs where CDex will make a workable copy.

+ Fraunhofer Codec :
   Download the codec files. (right-click, save to desktop, right-click on that, "open with" + winRar)
   Or download it as part of the Windows Media Player 10/11 distribution.

Fraunhofer handles distorted guitars better than LAME.

On Windows 7? You may need to avoid some corporateware licensing manipulation.

+ FLAC codec

Exact Audio Copy (EAC)

* File -> EAC Options -> Filename

Naming scheme

Code: [Select]
%artist%\%artist% - %albumtitle%\%artist% - %tracknr2% - %title%
(Checked) Use various artists naming scheme

Code: [Select]
various\%albumtitle%\%albumtitle% - %tracknr2% - %artist% - %title%
(Unchecked) Replace spaces by underscore

* File -> Compression Options -> Waveform

Wave Format: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (professional)

Sample Format: 128 kBit/s, 44100 Hz, Stereo

* File -> Metadata Options -> freedb

Your e-mail address: freedb@deathmetal.org

* Options -> Settings -> Filenames

Select a directory you want to use for your mp3 files. Then, use this as your filename filter:

Code: [Select]
%1\%1 - %2\%7-%4
This will create a directory for the artist name, and in it, a directory named after the artist and work:

Code: [Select]
  artist_name - work_name - nn - track_name.mp3

For example:
C:\MP3s\Emperor\Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse

Click the button on the interface for "Extract CD Track(s) to Compressed Audio File(s)."

To use FLAC in CDex:

Options -> Settings -> Encoder
In Encoder field, select:

+ "FLAC Encoder DLL" for FLAC
+ "Windows MP3 Codec" and in "Windows MP3 Codec" field (will appear below) "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec" or "LAME Encoder 3.65" for MP3

II. Archiving

+ winRAR
+ RAR for UNIX and Macintosh

Include NFO & URL files files in every archive to direct new users to audiofile.

Drag a folder of ripped MP3s ("Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse") into the winRAR window. It will produce an archive in the directory it displays in the main pane of its window. This archive will include the folder itself, and thus when someone unpacks it, they will not have loose MP3s.

If you are compressing a FLAC archive, please use the winRAR option "Split to volumes, bytes" which you can set to "ZIP-100 size (98,078k files)." This divides it into files of an easy size which areless likely to fail in downloads.

Name the archive using this standard:

Code: [Select]
Artist Name - Work Name (year)
This means that you will create an archive called "Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse.rar" which will unpack to a directory named "Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse."

Do not:
* use passwords on archives
* include m3us
* include full-size covers.

III. Uploading

Pick a free one-click file hosting servicesto upload the file from your desktop so that others can download it multiple times with only the direct URL to the file.

Our naming conventions exist to ensure these links get used as much as possible, which keeps them alive. Almost all of the links that die do so because of underuse, not because of copyright concerns.

Cover images

Upload to one of the following, in order of preference:

+ http://www.imgur.com/
+ http://www.photobucket.com/
+ http://www.imageshack.us/

IV. Posting

Use the search form to find the topic of the artist you want to update. If the topic does not exist, post a new one.

Here is the format to use:

Artist name
Artist name MP3s

Artist Name - Album Name (year) [ CD $8 ]

Artist Name - Album Name (Mega)
Artist Name - Album Name (Rapidshare)

This is what the code looks like:

Code: [Select]
Artist name
Artist name MP3s

Artist Name - Album Name (year) [ CD $8 ]

Artist Name - Album Name (Mega)
Artist Name - Album Name (Rapidshare)

Example of correctly done thread - Asphyx / Soulburn.

Amazon links: Each one of these links pays a small amount if a purchase is made after someone clicks the link. To find the Amazon link, use the Amazon search form to find the CD and its price, and append "&tag=darklegions-20" onto the end of the Amazon URL.

Name collisions: If more than one band exists using a name, put them in the same thread, and use "Band Name (Country Code)" for the title, where country code is one of the international domain name codes (SE, US, DE, CH).

Multiple bands: If bands share the same creative personnel, put them together in the same thread (First Name / Second Name).

Classical Posts

Use the form:

Artist Name - Work Name No. [1] ([4],[2], [3],[5])

1. "Opus Number"
2. Conductor last name
3. Orchestra/Symphony abbreviation (BPO, etc)
4. Year
5. Attributes: digital, stereo, mono, analog.

Do not include the host of the file (Mega, Rapidshare, SendItz).

V. Neoclassical Music Hub and KCUF Radio

Neoclassical Music Hub

For ten years, Death Metal Underground has sponsored a DC++ hub for the use of metal downloaders.

* Neoclassical Music Hub FAQ
* Hub address
* DC++ client software

KCUF radio

An early experiment in internet radio, KCUF brought nihilistic death metal, atavistic and romantic black metal, and transcendent ambient soundscapes to the world during the years 1997-1999. Thanks to user kontinual, an archive of the site exists for you to download older shows:

KCUF Radio

VI. Lossless Uploads

Any work that cannot be purchased legitimately can be posted in lossless FLAC format. Out of print, demos, live recordings, bootlegs and albums inaccessible to most of the world are all fair game.

When uploading a FLAC, upload an MP3 recording as well, so people can download 50-90mb and determine whether they want the 350mb lossless recording.

Essential Downloads

Members of this forum have put together a compilation based on a best-of list from the Dark Legions Archive/Death Metal Underground.

What are your rules for collectors?

This is not a collector's forum. Collectors want original releases with cover scans, high-bitrate MP3s or FLACs, and they want them for current and commercially available releases.

Are we rippping off artists and/or labels?

We are curators of several genres of the past which need defenders against those who would inundate them with talentless imitations, or obliterate them in a flood of mass media promotion for more commercial music.

As a result, our goal is to get consumers to listen to these relatively obscure recordings and purchase the ones they can enjoy. This both preserves the genre, and creates a "natural selection" where all recordings are heard, but the best are purchased, thus strengthening the genre by rewarding the good and smiting the lesser.

This is a home page for those who want to download heavy metal / underground metal mp3s. This practice is necessary because mainstream metal is drowning underground metal. Very few people know that these out of print and obscure classics exist, and they're not going to gamble their money on an unknown. Thus our procedure is simple: make them available at moderate bitrates so that people can figure out what they like, and then pass them on to a list of distros we like where they can find these CDs. If they can't buy the CD because it's OOP, we make it available in FLAC so they can burn their own copy. This puts pressure on bands and labels to re-release these cultural classics and keep them alive and in circulation in our culture. If you have any problems with this, you know where to find me. - Spinoza Ray Prozak

We are like your local library, but not limited by budget and physical space: you can check out any item that interests you, but to be fair, you have to return it. In our case, "returning it" means that you buy the actual CD, DVD or LP/EP.

This also keeps unnecessary waste out of the landfill by allowing people to avoid purchasing CDs they would have heard once and thrown out. Ultimately this benefits artists, labels, fans, nature and the art form itself.

Please, no mainstream or commercial music; we don't want it, and we are not here to rip off bands who make their money from the novelty of their work. We are here to promote the underground.

It is not the "responsibility" of the original uploader to re-upload. If you downloaded something and liked it, take the time to re-archive and re-upload. This also gets you points with regulars here for helping out instead of only downloading.

If you have comments about bands, start a thread in the Metal sub-forum.

The Audiofile section is for downloads and commentary clutters it up. Especially useless are requests, thank-yous, and one-line comments in the band thread.

Use the Requests thread to mention which uploads are dead and to request that others re-upload them. Include the URL of the forum topic on which you found the band.
