That’s the lowest percentage in the past year—so things are getting worse, not better. But things haven’t just gotten worse over the past 12 months; they’ve also gotten worse since the recession ostensibly ended and the recovery ostensibly began.

Options:

1. Don't work, take advantage of the semi-socialist system while living in your parents basement (TANF, Food Stamps, EBT Cards, etc.)
2. Get a semi-decent paying job and slack off / do the bare minimum
3. Get laid off and collect Unemployment indefinitely as the government keeps extending it
4. Get declared "disabled" and collect free money

Then do whatever you want.

Alternatively you could try to pursue a career in something which you think you could be proud of and give it your full effort.

I'm seeing a few small efforts toward alternatives but nothing whole scale in scope nor large scale involvement to that end.

Some do without cars, others get into permaculture, urban gardening and farmer's markets. But this isn't enough to affect a significant improvement for the new generations as a whole. Some of it is really just self-defeating and greenwashing.

Anything large scale is always a futile protest instead of a constructive project oriented toward making the present liberal mass society consumer system obsolete.

Do STEM. If you can't do STEM, find a trade or join the army. People have started to understand that STEM graduates are just generally smart people who can do most things well. So Physics and Mathematics graduates go on into the top levels of finance as well as their fields of study. I did Medicine, which I would count as a trade, it is one rung below STEM disciplines.

Don't feed futile dreams of anything else (like Philosophy majors). Most liberal arts curricula you can study in your spare time if you are interested. There are a few exceptions, Law etc. but it holds true for most of them. The IQ ethnocracy is coming, so preempt it.

Haha, I'm doing a Philosophy degree so that I can have a good degree from a good University.  The material we're taught is utter crap, which means I have to do my own studies on the side, but it's a viable option if one intends to use it towards further ends (like getting a teaching degree in one year rather than five).  Ultimately, though, I'm still planning on moving progressively further away from Western society until secession makes sense.  It seems I might be able to get a hold of some extremely cheap/good land in dear old England, which I can build up and make a bucketload from (Organic/Traditional farming, publish lots of random books, record lots of random music) before fucking off to Canada with the guys who'd help me set up shop here.  If that fails, I can teach/complain ("lecture").

Definitely not a path for the majority of people, but it's shaping up to be more than possible.

Perhaps I'm missing something as I couldn't distinguish between most areas of education and career-oriented financial security. This is what already occurs in society and is not an alternative to it.

Nationally, over 5.8 million young people (almost 15 percent) are disconnected—a figure that grew by 800,000 as a result of the economic crisis, according to the report.

Globally, the U.S. has a higher rate of youth disconnection than many advanced nations, including the United Kingdom (13.4 percent), Austria (11.4 percent), Canada (10.5 percent), Germany (9.5 percent), Norway (9.2 percent), Finland (8.6 percent), Switzerland (6.8 percent), Denmark (5.7 percent), and the Netherlands (4.1 percent).

Youth disconnection varies substantially by race. More than one in five (22.5 percent) young African-Americans are disconnected, 18.5 percent of Latinos, 11.7 percent of whites, and just 8 percent of Asian-Americans.
