Thanks to Tralfamadorian for making this thread - I may be able to contribute in a while (much work for now), as I've also attempted to delineate different riffing styles of various bands.  Would you accept material off Blizzard Beasts as being "Death Metal", at least in terms of the majority of the riffs?

Any and all metal riffs are welcome. The thread is entitled "Death Metal riff types" because I'm not that familiar with black metal and wasn't sure if others would contribute.

At that, I might just write up the amateur "studies" I did of Immortal earlier on in the year, observing the progression from Pure Holocaust to Blizzard Beasts.  Demonaz's riff style evolved from something awesome into something monstrous.

This is a great topic in which I can contribute more than any other. I have been in rigorous practice then usual, and my playing has improved.  That being said, if I could make an outline of the different death metal riff types, I can make some youtube videos displaying this riffs.

In classic Demilich fashion, a lot the riffs are based on using the A and C( or in tabulation, 0 and 3 on the low A string)  in this alternate pedal tone fashion.

I really like the wide intervals that Demilich uses in their riffs. Gives them a quirky, twisted feel.

Here's a fellow doing a pretty good cover of "Erecshyrinol". He sets up a great camera angle for viewing the full guitar, so you get to see how the riffs work; looks tough but fun as hell to play.

Most riffs can be defined by their developmental relation to one and other; they provide either contrast or variation, and achieve it via repetition and non-repetition. The musician seems to know intuitively what is required.

Please do, that would be awesome. Maybe some tabs as well? The beginning of Storming Through Redclouds and Holocaust Winds is insane, and Through the Halls of Eternity in particular sounds awesome to learn as well. Of course mostly all of Immortal from that epoch is pretty interesting musically.
