Today I am (finally) checking out Surgical Steel. I have to say I don't like it at all. It sounds EXACTLY like Heartwork. I actually have a soft spot for Heartwork because it was one of the first "extreme" metal albums I ever heard, but this album just feels like Carcass took their biggest selling album and tried to write something that sounded exactly like it. Pass...

Listening to Skepticism - Alloy. Never paid this band too much attention. Always favoured Ras Algethi. This is good though, I think this is their best album, where it all comes together and they are able to express themselves in their style. Stormcrowfleet is too much of just the same mood and has to be appreciated song by song.

Gorguts - Obscura
Bathory - Twilight of the Gods
Voivod - Target Earth
Zealotry - The Charnel Expanse (best 2013 Death Metal album, IMO)

Listening to Grand Belial's Key for the first time. "Goat of a Thousand Young" demo. It's a little hokey, especially with the weird keyboards. The version of "Shemhamforash" has an intro that sounds like it should be in a Rihanna song. Besides that, it's not the worst demo to come from a USBM band.

I've only listened to Stormcrowfleet, and I think that in the right mood, right setting, it does constitute an excellent experience.  But it's true that it is pretty much the same mood throughout all the songs.
I'm going to check that album out immediately. Thanks for the tip.

Besides that, it's not the worst demo to come from a Gay Midget Fecal Pr0n (GMFP) band.

Lol wut

Wordfilter strikes again. I didnt realize grand belials key was an N5BM band though.

Listening to Baphomet - The Dead Shall Inherit. One of those albums that initially misled me due to its aesthetic. The classic example of an album like that is Onwards to golgotha I suppose. It seems really primitive and bad, but once I had the patience to stick with it the impressive songwriting became apparent.

Shut me down if need be for going off topic, but I didn't realize there was an issue here with National Socialist bands. I got into a handful of Blazebirth Hall groups a little while back and was really floored at the quality of the composition as well as the raw quantity of energy coming from them. I know that knocking National Socialist bands is the PC thing to do but I never expect PC perspective to pervade this particular forum.

To compensate for my deviance, here is what I listened to today;

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence was annoying to me at first but this is just a plain good album no matter how you judge it. Good in all senses; outstanding depending on your perspective. Outstanding in my perspective.

Bathory - Hammerheart is always good.

Artificial Brain - Butchering Cosmic Giants (EP) - has anyone heard of these guys? I think the members come from faux-extreme metal groups but this is really engaging to me.

Dont have to be PC to knock N5BM, it sucks, the bands suck, the ideology sucks too. Yeah sure there are a few exceptions, but they are not really notable (I can only think of NM atm). As far as the ideology is concerned, getting a lot of things right but some vital things wrong is worse than bad.

Yesterday : Impurity (br) live!!!

Today:

Nocturnal Graves - Satan´s Cross.

I can imagine many reasons why you would say that, but I'm curious enough to ask you to clarify and elaborate. Do you take issue with National Socialism in general as an ideology? Or do you mainly have a problem with the bands?

Also, today:

More Bathory

The Abyss - The Other Side

It's as you say, the music is awful. That's the most damning aspect of it. I'm positive that at some point the Norwegian black metal celebs had NS sympathies but the music was not shit. I will say however that the only worthwhile NS band I've experienced is Spear of Longinus.

WOW!!

I didn't type N5BM. I typed American black metal band. I don't think this was a word filter. I have a feeling a wily mod may have changed it. Maybe because GBK isn't too appreciated around here? I don't know.

Just for fun, N5BM actually filters to NSBM.

And, on topic, I listened to AC/DC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap today for the first time in years. Still as awesome as it was when I was thirteen.

U5BM is word filtered, no wiliness.

USBM
NSBM
Opeth
Pantera

Collect them all!

I listened to Dawn - Nær Solen Thingamajig for a re-appraisal.  I would say it's better than Dissection but not as good as Far Away from the Sun.
