Bizarre? Metal, after its death, has some serious SWPL/hipster cool to it. Mainstream with a winking sense of rebellion, like Starbucks or organic food. This is the exact kind of article you should expect, like the recent Decibel list it contains what appears to be legit mentions amongst totally out of the blue ones, but remember that the bar here is NOT QUALITY.

The reception of "Towards the Megalith" by NPR and this guy was when I first became aware of how the supposed underground was achieving mainstream recognition. I'm not enthusiastic about it, but it certainly does not - and never will - preclude the existence of good, lesser-known metal.

Likely: zealous/business-savvy record labels are the primary factor in "outsiders" discovering the genre.
