The Sound of Noise

The Sound of Noise

Some say noise is an undesirable sound; others might describe it as any waveform that doesn't oscillate (and in turn produce some audible pitch). Another option yet is that of the realm beyond auditory sense i.e. subsonic vibrations.

But what about pop music that sounds squeaky clean but is soulless and jarring to the senses? What about certain ‘underground’ forms of music consisting predominantly of discordant combinations of notes played on instruments drenched in distortion? How could a metal listener appreciate the ‘clean’ sounds of classical music and yet not the contemporary equivalents?

Perhaps it comes down to harmony of elements and to what extent the concepts of ‘clean’ or ‘distorted’ mirror the reality from which they originate. And to what extent does the group or individual tune into that wavelength?

When I seek noise out, and give it my attention, I think of it as music.
When it intrudes and I only want it gone, then it's noise.
