The challenge Pestilence faces is that, starting with Testimony of the Ancients, they started relying on rock-based riffing and making those riffs more technical through rhythm and harmony, instead of working on riff shape. As a result, their songs lost the narrative dimension and became static verse-chorus with interruptions like rock, and their transitions were driven by lead guitar, dynamics and vocals instead of phrasal riff change. IMHO.
