Delius, Frederick

A Mass of Life / Requiem (Richard Hickox, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, 1996)

Frederick Delius (1862-1934) was an English atheist composer who, ironically, wrote a mass and requiem. However, the Mass is set to excerpts from Nietzsche's Zarathustra, while the Requiem is openly antagonistic to Christianity ("...the weaklings waxed sore afraid, and drugged themselves with dreams and golden visions, and built themselves a house of lies to live in."). Musically, the works are also riveting and beautiful.
