(Richard Hickox, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, 1996)
Frederick Delius (1862-1934) was an English atheist composer who, ironically, wrote a mass and requiem. However, the Mass is set to excerpts from Nietzsche's Zarathustra
, while the Requiem is openly antagonistic to Christianity ("...the weaklings waxed sore afraid, and drugged themselves with dreams and golden visions, and built themselves a house of lies to live in."). Musically, the works are also riveting and beautiful.
