Metal as white gospel

Metal as white gospel

Try singing the following, without instruments and backing track, by yourself, without shaping your voice to be mean or sad or emo, just sing it naturally:

Quote
Now in darkness world stops turning,
ashes where the bodies burning.
No more War Pigs have the power,
Hand of God has struck the hour.
Day of judgement, God is calling,
on their knees the war pigs crawling.
Begging mercies for their sins,
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings.
Oh lord, yeah!

If you listen, you can hear that this is gospel music, religious supplication in a time of self-indulgent confusion.

It is prayer.

These lyrics show up again:

Quote
Millions dead and dying
Mass death and destruction
Mass death and destruction

A smouldering wilderness
Mass death and destruction
Mass death and destruction

Now in darkness world stops turning
Mass death and destruction
Mass death and destruction

I think they need to be written a third time:

Quote
Now in darkness
World stops turning
In a universe
Which recycles
No one cares
There are no voices
Your planet died
Your species failed
Far away
Infinite planets
Another life
Starts to build
They know not
The name of
Earth

This is nihilism

Insightful observation.

Metal music always hit me as a form of protest music, addressing the lack of the assertive masculine (warrior) spirit of ancient times.

The better metal artists, of course, transcendented the inherent whining and excess preachiness of the protest because their vision is both realistic and inspiring.

Very true. It's the heavy in heavy metal that makes it take on heavy topics. Heavy means you look at them as a leader would, seeing the whole span of humanity, not as a normal human mouse would, avoiding offending anyone and trying to accumulate enough cheese for winter/retirement.
