It's = it is
Its = belongs to it

Odd case: Its being gay did not stop Dimmu Borgir's "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" from reaching the top ten.

Your = belongs to you
You're = you are

Odd case: Your going to help them is appreciated.

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant reached the top ten?!?

Thanks for posting this, it seems people on forums need reminding from time to time.

Reminds me of the "grammar for metalheads" post by ChristianHolocaust. That one gave me a good laugh.

It's quite disappointing a topic like this would be necessary here. Its necessity shocks me in ways one would not be able to fathom.

Those are not odd cases.

“Its being gay” is referring to the “being” as the noun and “its” as the possessive pronoun, just as you said “belongs to you”. “The being gay did not stop” with some part of “did not stop” being the verb (I can’t remember grammar that well). If it were “It’s” that would contain “it is” in which case the sentence would be “It is being gay did not stop…”

“Your going” is referring to “going” as the noun and “your” is the possessive pronoun describing whose “going” it is. “You’re” would give the sentence two verbs: “You are going to help them is appreciated.”

They're odd in the sense that you're using a possessive case over a gerund which can sound odd to the ears at first.

Somehow, I don't think anyone is bothered when someone screws up English as their second language. Not all of us may think multiculturalism is a good idea, but we even tend to be forgiving of it from non-native speakers in our countries.

What drives us batshit is that our own people can't get it right anymore. I have even seen this error show up on CNN.com and Time magazine. It is not difficult, and if someone has been speaking English their whole life, they should know it.

I think it's my new gauge of the American collapse: how many major media outlets can still speak the language correctly.

The same problems happen in Québec, our language is being massacred. I try my best to chat in a proper French.
