I have always wanted to live in the metal way. I don't have enough chutzpah to call myself a musician, so instead, I'm just a fan. A member of a subculture.
Still, if I want to live metal, how?
The first attempt that might make sense is to really get into the music. Buy every zine. Buy lots of CDs. Go to every show. Support local bands. If any metal band needs something, give it to them.
I know several people living like this. The CD collections increase, but they seem more removed from the world than ever before. When your car barely runs, your daughter needs braces and you're buying the newest LLN CDs, priorities might be out of whack. It's a good way to get nowhere. And most of those CDs, zines, and local bands are moronic trash.
The other way to live metal that occurs after another level of reflection is to live the principles of metal. No guilt. No apologies. No individualism. Join with the forest, and don't try to be the most brightly adorned tree. Total war. No forgiveness. Persecute the weak. Live every day like it's your last. Be ready to die for what you believe in. Read the occult and Nietzsche. Spend your CD budget on firearms. Do not tolerate the herd.
I'm leaning toward the second, although the first is much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much easier.
