Death metal is the fusion of hardcore punk (Discharge, Black Flag, The Exploited) and progressive, indie British heavy metal (Angel Witch, Judas Priest). It was invented in triune by Hellhammer, Bathory, Sodom and Slayer. Its second generation in 1985 finalized its style with Sepultura, Possessed, Master and Necrovore.
The genre grew throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, blossoming in 1992 and burning out by 1995, at which point it was replaced by the black metal music which had been less popular but originated in the same seminal artists. Death metal is known for its growling, guttural, bassy, overdriven vocals and its seemingly random riffs that fit together into geometrical structures, as well as its overt Satanism and rejection of both materialism and mysticism. As a result, we say it is nihilistic music. http://hubpages.com/hub/death-metal
