UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US black metal movie / THE EGG horror film

From the website:

"In 1991, Norwegian churches started to burn, just after an underground circle of metal musicians had formed. While reporters and police scrambled for answers, more and more churches went up in flames. They had no leads until Varg Vikernes, one of the architects of an underground music-art-political scene known as BLACK MEAL took credit and was quickly arrested. While he was in police custody, the media ran a largely fabricated story of satanic rituals, abductions and sacrifices. This film reveals the true story behind the music, murders and church burnings, and shows what happened when these young men, who tried to change the world using music, art and violence, found that they could not control what they had created."

K, first up, we love Chicago. Great town, GREAT crowd, thank you all for coming and for being such a great audience! HUGE thanks to those who helped us get the word out there. Despite being loopy from a cold, it was a very fun Q & A and we really enjoyed it. (P.S. we don't always.) I know there were many people who didn't get in: we're going to try to bring it back for you.

Just like San Francisco: We managed that one, the film starts a weeklong run July 31 at the Roxie Theater in SF. I really hope all you who didn't get to see it at YBCA will be able to catch one of these screenings. And having said that: this WOULD NOT have been possible had so many of you not supported the film at Yerba Buena. A million thanks. And then some. Please help us get the word out if you can - it's really tough with so little notice. Thank you!

More screenings coming: In addition to the list below, we are working on lots more. We have A TON going on here, working like mad to get as much done as we can. We've started working with Variance Releasing, they are not only awesome people, they can and will bring the film to a lot more places than we could on our own.

We REALLY need promo help in Tucson, Albuquerque, Chapel Hill, and Philadephia. Can anyone help flyer there?

A final note: this myspace page is fairly nonfunctional. We can't send messages (well, we can, but they go straight to you spam box) so please write us at [email protected] for anything. That's also the mailing list address, someday I will figure out how to make a real mailing list that I don't have to manually manage. For now, no time to work that out!

I saw the movie in Chicago over the weekend.

One of the things I was afraid of was that the movie was going to merely tell the story of the early 90's Norwegian Black Metal scene, of which I think many black metal fans know the gist of. But instead of reporting what happened, they let the major players of the scene at the time explain it in their own words, of which I feel demystified some of they hype around the events, but still maintained the integrity of what started the movement.

I do feel however the movie was more made for fans of black metal rather than outsiders. The friends I brought with me to see the movie who knew little to nothing about black metal felt the time line of the events and where the innovators of the scene fit into the larger picture, wasn't clear. They also complained there was very little actual black metal music in the movie.

Overall, I think the movie is worth seeing. There are some worthwhile interpretations of the scene by Fenriz and Varg, that I feel give a deeper perspective of what was going on over what has been written in fan zines and websites about it. Although at the Q&A the makers of the movie mentioned they cut out Varg talking about neo-Naziism because they were afraid it would set the tone for the whole movie,  they did say many of the interview pieces that didn't make it into the movie will be on the DVD which they said may be out in 1 to 2 years.

For any interested Canadians, this is the response I got when I asked about a Winnipeg screening:

"We're working on it.  Canada's tricky, there are province to province rules and certifications, very time-consuming."

i personally think making a movie about black metal is like making a rubber duck about architecture.  it doesn't work.  especially with these Norwegian goofballs from 20 years ago, most of them are either clueless from alcohol/drug dementia or so high on themselves that they couldn't clearly communicate their motivations for making the music they made a generation ago.  i've seen fenriz on camera before, he's like Beavis and Butthead after 30 years of daily weed smoking, quite disheartening.  in 2009, he should just stay behind the drum kit.  i'm also disappointed in how this is yet another documentary on Norway, hardly an original idea, and not quite relevant considering all that's happened in black metal all over the world since then, in addition to the fact that the principals in the Norway scene haven't made decent records in over ten years.  Norway never had a monopoly on black metal, they just had some crazy teenagers who killed each other and committed some acts of vandalism.  what gives?

Incredibly surprising that they're going to be showing it in my city.

Sounds like it'll be true to black metal though, so I'll definitely see it, if only for the Varg interviews (which look very promising: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSLdRu2Eymg).

Variance Films to release acclaimed black metal doc
“UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US” theatrically in November

Variance Films is proud to announce the acquisition of US theatrical
rights for UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US, the acclaimed documentary from
directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell.  The film will open November
20 in NYC at Cinema Village and in Austin at the Alamo Drafthouse, and
December 11th in Los Angeles at Laemmle’s Sunset 5, with more dates to
be added throughout November, December and January.

An official selection at international film festivals including AFI,
Raindance, Athens, Gothenburg, and many others, UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES
US is the first documentary to go behind the scenes of black metal.
Originating in Norway, black metal is a scene that is equal parts
music genre, terrorist movement, and postmodern art scene.  Rising to
worldwide notoriety after a series of church burnings in Norway in the
early nineties, the media was quick to assign the “Satanist” label to
both the genre and founders—but the truth, as revealed in exclusive
and chilling interviews with the leaders of the scene (one in jail for
murder and arson), is far more complex.

“I’ll be honest- my personal musical tastes run far more towards
Radiohead than black metal,” said Dylan Marchetti, President of
Variance Films, “so that fact that I found this documentary
fascinating and completely engrossing from the first frame is a credit
to the directors—they’ve created a film so truly unique that you don’t
have to be familiar with the music, or even enjoy it, to appreciate
the film.  This is not a typical music documentary—it goes so much
deeper than that.”

“We couldn't be happier to have partnered with Variance Films on the
theatrical release of Until The Light Takes Us,” directors Aaron Aites
and Audrey Ewell said.  “They're not scared by the fact that it's as
much a social critique as it is a rock doc, and will see that it's
presented properly.  We were approached by a lot of companies who, due
to the flashy subject matter, wanted this to be an exploitation
release, and we had to pass.  But Dylan and his team truly understand
and respect the film, and we are pleased to be working with Variance
in bringing this film to a much larger audience.”

The deal was negotiated between Marchetti on behalf of Variance Films
and the filmmakers.

News: Until The Light Takes Us was awarded the Golden Athena for best
documentary at the Athens International Film Festival, taking place in
Athens, Greece last week.

We've added a festival screening, scroll below to find the Helsinki,
Finland listing.

We've announced an afterparty for our London screening Oct 7 with
Raindance Film Festival, scroll below for details.

We're announcing several more US cities that have been confirmed for
our US Theatrical release, scroll below for details.  Many more being
added continuously.

STREET TEAM:  We are putting out a call to arms for street team
volunteers in all US cities.  We need your help to get the word out on
the film!  MOST especially if you are located in a confirmed city -
please send us a NEW EMAIL with your city in the subject line.  The
sooner, the better!

To all those in European countries, Canada, Mexico and South America
where we do not yet have a screening: we appreciate all your support,
feel free to also sign up for the street team - we log all this and
will get back to you once we have distribution in your city.  We
receive countless emails from people in France, Germany, Spain, Italy,
and Mexico (and others, don't worry if you're in another country,
we're working on all of it), we have made note of all of this and will
get there as quickly as possible.

Posters: We have just made 27x40 posters and they are beautiful.
Website's about to get overhauled and you'll be able to see them on
there.  We've received many requests to make posters available to buy,
and are taking some with us to sell in Europe.  They're REALLY heavy,
so supplies will be extremely limited.  If you will be at one of our
European screenings, you can email us by Oct 3rd to reserve one.
Again, send a NEW EMAIL.  Responses to this email will not reach us.
The price will be 14 Euros/British pounds.  We are not yet set up to
take pre-orders for posters in the US.  The price will be $20 plus $6
shipping.  This may seem expensive, but they're not cheap to make, and
this is less expensive than most posters of this type.  As an added
bonus, you'll know that they were rolled up and sent off with love
(and probably lots of grumbling because I'm very bad at manual labor).
US order fulfillments will not begin until early November (because
we'll be in Europe).  And it may take longer if figuring out how to do
a Paypal Merchant account and tax issues takes a long time.  We'll let
you know once we figure out how to handle international orders.
Breath-holding not recommended.  We're filmmakers not business people,
and have very limited time.

Again, STREET TEAM: Please email us at [email protected] with your
city in the subject line.  **If you have done this previously, there
is no need to do it again, it will only confuse things.  If you're not
sure if you've done this already, do it again ; )

THANK YOU to all who have supported us and our film, and who continue to do so.

Wow, there's going to be a release here in the culture void of central Michigan. Well, unless you consider hippies, "modern art" and hipsters culture.
