There is certainly something rotten in the state of Norway: Satanism, the killing of “faggots”, the burning of churches, and lead singer Dead shooting his brain out with a shotgun, prompting an interviewee to opine how “Dead was dead in a bed”. It can only be one thing: Black Metal.

This documentary concentrates on some of the key players in the Black metal underground scene and investigates the scene’s influences, characters, art and the often-disturbing belief systems that are present in this morbidly engaging world.  We hear the case against Christianity and its inherent disrespect for other cultures.  American imperialism, consumerism and the tabloids also get it in the neck.

Often the music takes a back seat to the sensational events that are discussed. But there’s enough to sate anyone from the darkside. The main Norwegian bands featured are Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, a wave of metal acts that take their cue from metal veterans Venom and Celtic Frost – with that regimented sound of distorted guitars, double-kick drums and the kind of vocals that make one want to eat one’s own ears.

A healthily objective viewpoint is achieved by New York directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell, who take matters pretty seriously, though at times, it’s the interviewees who seem to find the bizarre incidents almost amusing.

Until the Light Takes Us comes to Houston on December 10, at the Alamo Drafthouse in West Oaks ( map).

This movie shows why people make heavy metal music, through the lens of black metal. The unpopularity of truth, the callowness of most people, and the creepy ways that religion, McDonald's and institutional authority resemble each other are all there.

Until the Light Takes Us is about the birth of what we now call "black metal," which was the fully-developed form of the music inspired by Sarcofago, Venom, Bathory and Hellhammer that erupted during the early 1990s in Scandinavia.

What makes this movie better than most "metal movies" is that it digs into the psychology of metalheads, and these specific metalheads, to show what inspired their music -- and radical acts of violence.

I'm curious to see if this is shown anywhere in Australia, and if so to what extent. At the moment it says "TBA", so perhaps that is some indication that they may be bargaining currently, or at least considering it.

I'm curious to know when Toronto is going to be put down on the list. As well as where it'll be shown, I can only think of one small theatre they'd play it at..

Saw this last night in New York City. Brief synopsis:

I did not have high expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. As a film, it was a little unfocused and random at times, but the content was pretty good. Lots of good lines from Varg, while Fenriz seemed like a clown. Since the only voices in the film were those of the artists, the tone was critical of what black metal has become, namely a charade or simulacra of itself that is very removed from black metal's origins as an honest, uncompromising genre.

Until the Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties with a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings.

The documentary goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

he result is a poignant, moving story that's as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what's actually true, as it is a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.
