Like the cover, reminds me of Dead Can Dance's "Spleen and Ideal".

Pentti Linkola is the kind of thinker that surrounds himself with controversy. Commenting on the school massacre that took place in Finland in 2007, Linkola, as always, took the opportunity of flaming the press:

- The massacre was too small. In the long run it doesn't help shooting some fellow students. What is needed is a larger movement to reduce the population.

Doesn't look like a bitter statement to me either. That's pragmatism that understands lasting reward following uncomfortable work.

I'm in the middle of this, and so far it's pretty interesting to say the least. Most of it is reflection, but it's damn sensible reflection. It gets you thinking.

The use of dissensus here is akin to pan-nationalism, or more broadly, autonomous micro-states to replace the interdependent modern empire states. Most of the various approaches are dead ends, but they remain historically recursive. The idea with dissensus, pan-nationalism or micro-states is that failure is always allowed room, but it is unable to ever dominate the whole. The price is that success is also always limited to its own place.

Human societies, like ecosystems, evolve in complex and unpredictable ways, making it futile to try to impose rigid ideological forms on the patterns of evolutionary change. Instead, social change must explore many pathways over which we have no control. The troubling and exhilarating prospect of an open-ended future, he proposes, requires dissensus - a deliberate acceptance of radical diversity that widens the range of potential approaches to infinity.

People have no idea how we got such reckless growth, consumerism, lying politicians, etc.

It's because we have a huge group of people who are totally irresponsible, oblivious, don't want to learn and don't want anything but the modern equivalent of bread and circuses (Heineken and iPods).

That group and its demographic/purchasing/voting power is what empowers the corruption and stupidity.

Hey, at least they get to look cool while oblivious, gobbling, gabbing and decorating. This has got to be an extrovert inversion of the INTJ/Aspie type, where never speaking one's mind is normal rather than challenging and vocalizing always trumps reflective inner dialogue. Leap first, look later. Freaks.

Normal folks are socially adaptive. They'll benefit by speaking their minds only when the setting and audience are right. The hipster never does and is eventually loathed, the Aspie always does and is often foolish for doing so.

Others are trying to make it through and, while some of their actions are clearly vapid, their goal is sensible and non-manipulative.
