I'm being sent Havohej's new album as a promo. I can't wait! High hopes for this one.

Much to my disappointment, upon first listenings, this album is trash. I'll keep listening but so far this seems like fodder for the recycle bin. (I have to review it, its one of my promos)

I've been hearing mostly positive things about the new Suffocation album. Any thoughts?

"Distracting Stone" the 2nd album, is garbage sadly, but River of Corticone deserve every second of your time. Axis of Advance was boring for you? Perhaps you were listening to "The List" instead of "Strike". =)

Belphegor is pretty mediocre, if you want material of theirs which is good in any respect, stick to the first 4 albums.

Kronos I wouldn't call classic, but certainly very solid. Above average for modern death metal.

Akercocke, Hour of Penance and Benighted I'd suggest staying far far away from.

That list isn't composed of "influential" bands. For example: few compositions of Sorcier des Glaces inspire me personally but I think that its impact on metal is insignificant.

Disciples of Mockery's Prelude to Apocalypse is well composed and had broader range of themes than mentioned Incantation's latest. It is a solid work.

Absence of Crimson Massacre is a mistake unless im missing something about them...Even if their new album will fail they deserve mention for Luster of Pandemonium because while not flawless it lonely leads technicality and phrasing in good direction.

The omission of Crimson Massacre is a bit startling now that you mention it. No Nox Intempesta either. Both are better than half the represented bands. Legion of Doom would also better be served with something not off 'The Horned Made Flesh.' Try Narjniians Eternal Winter, Chariots of Thunder, or Bridge of Lunar Tears.

Good points, however Akercocke's "Words Unspoken..." is phenomenal and I'm totally gay for French metal, so I am admittedly a raving Benighted fanboy.  Thoughts on the Varberg quartet Anata? Maybe I'm totally lame but I do believe Schalin & Allenmark are one of the more astounding guitar tandems in metal history.  I also think that Blood Freak "Multiplex Massacre" is FUCKING awesome.

They may be influential but it's not kind of influence we want to have for future generations. Just listen to them - they are ostentative but bland with weak structures, nothing underneath, reminds me of Kataklysm. I don't pay attention for acoustic and keyboard parts , as they are there to distract. They even aren't so brutal...

Well you're certainly entitled to your opinion, however I disagree: 'Elvinfris' is an awesome slab of grind-influenced art.

And of course 'brutal' is a bastardized cliche term that I should have known not to use when characterizing 'grind/death' oriented music since music of this nature is inherently 'brutal' and adding a redundant adjective does raise an objective eyebrow.

Anata is solid. Nothing to lose your mind over, but like Kronos, above average for modern death metal.
