Hessian.org Banned at Local Library

Hessian.org Banned at Local Library
June 25, 2010, 12:44:39 AM
Where I'm currently sitting at the Delhi Hills Branch of the Hamilton County Public Library in Cincinnati, OH, http://www.hessian.org is banned for the following reasons: Extreme politics/opinion.

There is a space for comments/questions below this message and I typed a rant that is too long for any admin to give a flying shit. Half of this library's terminals are used up by adolescents, browsing youtube and facebook or playing crude little flash video games. Extreme politics and opinions? I thought the library was one of the last safe havens where radical views could be expressed! Will they soon start burning the works of Marx and Nietzsche because they're too "extreme"?

Has anyone else had similar problems with their home/school/public networks?

Many years ago I was in an internetcafe and tried visiting anus.com but discovered that the site had been blocked simply because of the name "anus.com" Apparently their pornfilter blocked it thinking it was a gay pornsite.

Other than that I never encountered something like you experienced. You're right about "extreme politics" being a lousy argument for a library to ban anything. It might sound silly but you could try starting a petition or hide flyers in certain books when the staff isn't looking. Or maybe you can talk to the staff and get them on your side and leave the flyers in plain sight.

ANUS is blocked by UK autoblockers for "extreme politics/hate", or similar.  I constantly have to remind people that "hate" is not a noun.  The noun is "hatred".

Last year I remember that ANUS.com was blocked at my school because of "Personal opinions"...

Norton Antivirus had beaten you all: Banned for Occult content.

It is quite likely that the library uses some sort of auto website blocking program to prevent homeless people and aforementioned adolescents from viewing pornography and masturbating in the bathroom. You could try asking about it at the front desk, you might find they are more willing to help you than you think.

It shows just how little thought actually goes into censorship when you think that hessian.org puts a pretty friendly face on metal culture and whilst being honest is incredibly tame when compared to a lot of sites which i'm sure aren't blocked.

Funny enough anus.com wasn't blocked from my schools internet in any way, and I went to a Catholic school.

Standard procedure: find out who makes the filtering software, Google their name + "review process," then follow the instructions to contact that. Almost always after a review these sites come up clean.

Marx should be burned due to stupidity.

banned for the occult is all too funny. A year ago I tried to look into the occult, only to find it is some christian fantasy.

I mean, is there even anything like blazing upside-down crosses or blood-covered Paul Ledneys on the site? As far as I can remember, it was as someone else put it, tame.

Fiction: evil overlords watch us to see if we've encountered dangerous information.

Reality: overworked brain-dead bureaucrats react when people complain, ban shit at random, and hire out services to figure out what websites are bad. Those services are huge profit centers because savvy businessmen hire stoned college students to make their best guesses at which sites are bad for $8/hour instead of hiring philosophical jihadists who will actually, you know, assess whether the site is crazy or not.

Everyone's looking for a scapegoat. Better to look for a rapesheep.

Conservationist, do you hail from Wales or Scotland? JK. I see your point, though. I don't remember ever blaming anyone in particular, and on an unrelated note, this library has supplied me with all the great works of Nietzsche, Goethe (I actually struck up a good conversation about Faust upon mentioning Goethe to the librarian), Schopenhauer, and Kant to name a few. It's clearly no one in the public library's intention to ban information on a cultural movement, the whole process of banning websites is pretty black and white, I suppose.

Blame isn't the point. They're just like other public services, responding to complaints. Our whole culture is obsessed with finding the motherfucker in the back office who "did this to us," when we did it to ourselves.

Wales or Scotland? Why do you ask? IS IT THE SHEEP LOVE?
