Absu - Bartharum V.I.T.R.I.O.L.

It genuinely almost makes me cry, it's so amazing.  I could stare at it for hours on end.

The reason I got into metal to begin with.

Suffocation-Human Waste, Effigy of the Forgotten
Morbid Angel-Altars of Madness
Morpheus Descends-Rituals of Infinity
Baphomet-The Dead Shall Inherit
the original Carcass covers
Autopsy-Severed survival

The album Art I picked here is based not only on its visual appeal, but how it represents the album. I'm sure lots of people find the art on the Baphomet cover, and mabey even the Morpheus and Autopsy albums cheezy or unprofessional, but they do capture the feel of the album. Dirty, raw, and just ugly.

Or some of them even represent whole genre (at least IMO) -

Borknagar - Borknagar
Darkthrone - Panzerfaust

etc. ... Simply I like all the pics of forests and landscapes used for covers

Thanks for the link.

I always loved the cover of Transilvanian Hunger. It seems perfectly representative of the music inside.

My all time favourite album cover is Iron Maiden`s Piece Of Mind.
The picture of Eddie in the padded cell is striking
and fits in with the cerebral nature of the material and title of the album.

Secondly it would be Black Sabbath`s Heaven And Hell with the angels smoking.
The angels represent the heavenly side of the title whilst a smoking addiction represents the
hellish side (at least that`s my interpretation).
I think whoever came up with this put some thought into it.

Next it would be Pestilence`s Consuming Impulse.
The look of horror on the guy`s face covered with ants sums up the sinister and horrifying aspects of death metal perfectly.

Lastly I`d have to say Running Wild`s Branded And Exiled with the band`s logo as a branding iron.
I don`t have any metal t shirts, but if I did, I`d want the front cover of that one on it.

My nomination for all time WORST would have to be Faith No More`s Angel Dust with a heron (or whatever bird that is) on the front.
It has nothing to do with the lyrics, album title and unless I`m missing some deeper meaning, is completely
unrelated to the whole spirit and content of the album.
Then again, that applies to all FNM album covers, so maybe it`s the whole point.

Emperor In the Nightside Eclipse is a clear winner here, or Bathory's Blood Fire Death. I have to say that some of the worst album covers come from Immortal, good as the music is, their posing is just ridiculous. Having said that, At the Heart of Winter is up there with ITNE and BFD for shear coolness. The one album cover where they're not posing.

Good thread. So many fvcking great metal album covers to choose from. So many are just too brutal for words. But my favourite isn't that brutal though, I think you'll agree it is totally cool:

But what I hate the most are those PC edited LARP photos that are used as covers for some of Graveland's albums. That is so fake!

Speaking of posers, check out Manowar`s Into Glory Ride, Witchkiller`s Day Of The Saxons

And when it comes to truly terrible, I can`t forget Exciter`s `Violence And Force`

As much as I love the band, I agree some of their artwork is pretty shitty. However, the cover for Deathcult for Eternity (and music) conveys useful Aztec cosmic idealism. A +.

Venom - Black Metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Metal_%28album%29)

Totally captures Black Metal IMO, the gothic script is good as well.

Nirvana - Bleach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleach_(album))

Dudes on the cover just thrashing out, total classic.  (and yes the Bleach Album is Metal, just listen to the song Negative Creep)

An example of an album that sucks is the Bathory 'Greatest Hits' album
Katalog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katalog).  Bathory almost always had great album covers, but dude must have dropped the ball on this one.

I knew a kid whose brother had painted Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' and 'The Scorpions 'Blackout' on two huge walls. It looked fantastic.

Dio's 'Holy Diver' used to tickle my fancy as a youth. Great anti-christian artwork.

Sepultura's Arise and Beneath the Remains always fascinated me. There's so much going on in those pictures. If you try to focus on one aspect of it, it rearranges itself on you and belies all attempts to understand it, especially the Arise cover. Yet, by focusing intently, you can derive more enjoyment of the image by isolating the parts within and then letting the reintegrate back into the majestic whole.

Another album cover that sucks is this one from Dark Funeral, I think from their first CD 'The Secrets Of The Black Arts'.  It was just real bland and boring.  Eventually I just took the CD and put into one of my spare Crystal Cases and threw their art-work away!  However I do like Dark Funerals uptempp Black Metal.

When it comes to the logos (this could be a whole other thread) there is one by Absurd (alot of bands have multiple logos) that incorporates both an inverted pentagram and an upside down cross so that is a favorite of mine!

When it comes to logos I'm pretty conservative and old-fashioned.

I think the best is certainly the one of Darkthrone.
For me it represents the special atmosphere of (the early) Darkthrone just perfectly. What's more it fits greatly above any b&w picture of a forest (which is the best alternative for a  CD cover IMO ;D).

On the other hand I like Varg's point of view - simply not using any popular symbols (pentagram or inverted cross) in order to be different from the rest of metal bands of 90's.

I don't like Immortal's original logo - it is over the top IMO - too comlicated and too "fat"... looks like a bad ghetto grafiti.

Two logos that I really hate are Judas Priest's and Sodom's...

I think perhaps my favorite to use as design is Obituary's Cause of Death. I adore the sinister, Lovecraftian feel to it, of a twisted and near perverse landscape, where one is captivated by fear, but also respect for something of such immense power.

A tad minimalistic, but still representative of the impressive music they both contain. Favourite cover art here is the Burzum and Aske compilation (already mentioned), Dethrone The Son Of God (which has been referred to as 'humorous' several times, anyone have this impression?), The Celtic Winter, Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, Dawn Of The Black Hearts and the first black metal records from Darkthrone.

I also used to spend considerable amounts of time just staring at the old Slayer album covers and Emperor's ITNe while listening to the music, back in my early teens. Such perfect marriages of music and artwork have rarely been achieved, even in the fantastical/ mythological realms explored in much metal.

Gorguts - Considered Dead

One of Dan Seagrave's covers that's not so hopelessly nonsensical (unlike Effigy of the Forgotten, Breeding the Spawn, Imperial Doom, as much as I liked those covers when I was younger), and my favorite of his, along with Left Hand Path and Like an Everflowing Stream.

Therion - Beyond Sanctorum

There are a number of demo cover arts that are fantastic as well. Although I understand it's been reissued with different art several times, I've always liked this version of Thergothon's Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sogoth:

(and of course for black metal, Burzum's entire discography, and ITNE)

To me there does seem to be some disparity between the propositions of the best of these artworks and the music with which they are attached. As much as I love Beyond Sanctorum and Considered dead, what was so exciting about the whole experience of these albums was how ambitious and adventuresome they were; clearly Therion didn't continue to live up to the aesthetic equivalent of the light of a new day striking the decaying rock of an ancient obelisk.

In addition to that I would say Scorpions - Virgin Killer

And from those not mentioned: Soulside Journey(by comic book artist Duncan Fegredo I suppose), Gas, Flames, Bones, Unholu Cult, all from Pestilence with that "sphere theme" , few from Nachtmystium and many of those kitsh Cold War era like Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, Rigor Mortis and continuation of that style in Prophecies of a Dying World and World Demise. Also few famous bootlegs...

Besides from "metal artists" like Whelan, Seagrave or Necrolord many reproductions of Giger, Beksinski, even Bruegel fits music very well.

King Crimson often had guys in the band that were not always musicians, but that would write lyrics and create the artwork. Notably Peter Sinfield who composed lyrics from "In the Court" to "Islands".

Obviously not all of us are artists, but I think it would be really cool if metal musicians did their own artwork, design, and so on.  Those who do have the artistic ability would be able to create a more complete vision, artistically, musically, and otherwise - like Wagner's vision of the Gesamtkunstwerk.  Metal ought to move toward that.

The only band I can think of who's done this so far is Burzum... any others?

i've always loved this painting. it expresses the infinite nature of the machinery of time and the intrinsic meaninglessness of the individual journey outside of the self.

it would have been interesting if darkthrone continued on the technical death metal path, if they kept rehearsing the material that later became 'goatlord' and made a follow up to this masterpiece.

Norsk and English both share similar capitalization rules, as opposed to German; for captions of books and songtitles there exists to my experience an exception: "the standard rule in the English [and German] language is to capitalize words that are the first or the last word in the title and those that are not coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), prepositions (in, to, over), articles (an, a, the), or the word to when used to form an infinitive. Note that short verbs (Is, Are, Do) and pronouns (Me, It, His) are capitalized. Do not replicate stylized typography in logos and album art, though a redirect may be appropriate"

No, actually Jos. A. Smith drew the Bathory goat (same guy who did the artwork on the new AVRS).

Quorthon took it from a book on witchcraft that Jos. illustrated.

I read that he peiced it together from various cheesy horrer comics, i could be wrong in this, please correct me. But i am interested to hear of other bands that have created their own cover art, concept or art itself.

"A piece of one of my illustrations from WITCHES by Erica Jong, was used for the logo for the group BATHOR[sic] which is regarded as the "father" of this particular sub genre of heavy metal."

Ah okay.  Maybe I should stop reading metalarchives :-/

Metalarchives says what it was supposed always to be: a drawing by Janicke Wise-Hansen, like in the Burzum album.

Dethrone The Son Of God (which has been referred to as 'humorous' several times, anyone have this impression?)

I love the original cover of this one. The contrast of a sunny meadow and Paul ledney with a bloody face and doing that ridiculous pose is both humorous and meaningful in some way i can't put my finger on. Too bad on the reissue they darkened the scene.

Yeah, that's right, and to clarify, it's english prepositions of 5 letters or less that are left uncapitalized.
