Title: Examples of how good metal gets
Post by: adioshombre on August 27, 2005, 11:21:09 PM
I think it helps to give things some context, to see what are the heights that metal bands reached, so people know how good it can be

Best:
Burzum

Better:
Immolation
Immortal
Emperor
Enslaved
Morbid Angel

Good:
Incantation
Darkthrone
Slayer

haha, agreed!

for me, perfection would probably be these releases:

at the gates - terminal spirit disease (minus the bonus material)
cryptopsy - none so vile
darkthrone - transylvanian hunger

No one will probably care about my opinion on what is the best, so I will just give my opinion on the worst thing I've seen in "metal" recently.

My opinion on this video : This is gay.

I'm a bit confused as to whether we're discussing great bands or great metal albums. I don't think bands that have released one sole masterpiece should be listed alongside those that have released three or more outstanding albums. At the top i would have Burzum, Darkthrone, Graveland, and Immolation, Gorguts, and Morbid Angel. These are definitely the best that it gets concerning metal bands. Other greats worth mentioning are Beherit, Gorgoroth, Vader, Suffocation, and i'm pleased someone mentioned Fleshcrawl who have released several fucking solid albums during their career.

"Best", "better", "good" are all relative. Everyone has one's own understanding of these words, and one's own criterea. Could anyone of you proove why Burzum is "best", any logical explanations ?

Have you considered that the presence of relative opinions regarding quality actually suggests some sort of universal aspect to qualitative judgement?  That relatively stupid people define "Best" one way, and people who are relatively smarter define it in a way that approaches the relatively smartest should indicate that there is some universal aspect to the quality.
You're dumb, I'm smart, and I say Burzum is one of the best.

But if one wants to play the anarcho-socialist and pretend that the presence of different opinions demonstrates that there can be no universality, if one wants to cower in fear at the thought that there might be someone more qualified than themselves, be my guest.

Burzum's the best not because of technical proficiency or compositional know-how (though Varg is skilled in both areas), but because the music is spirit-become-sound.  Few other groups manage to create music with such feeling.

("Universal" and "relative" are used in place of the more common "objective/subjective" because we are speaking entirely about the subject, not discussing objects at all.  Let there be an end to colloquialisms!  They encourage only misunderstandings.)

Music is not the subject where you can pick up the single "best" performer. You say Burzum's music has feeling, no other performer is capable of. It is your subjective opinion, your way perception. Some other person will not "find" those feelings in his music, thus the discussion is solely about favourites and preferences.

i.e. burzum is relative to people who value spirit in music. and a specific spirit at that.

the relativism/universalism dichotomy is a distraction as it it far from absolute.

To what extent is art spirit/feeling?

and a specific spirit at that.

That the spirit is specific is irrelavant--it's still spirit.  I wasn't talking about specifics.

What is a dichotomy?
Did I really present one?
No.  In fact, the discussion of relativism and universality presupposes the lack of such a dichotomy; my entire conceptual argument is dependent upon the non-existence of said dichotomy.
Move past the barriers of language.

One does not ask a blind man his opinion on a painting.
Those who disagree with me are deaf.  There is no "subjectivity" (in the sense you use the term), but a relative (look up the difference between "subjective" and "relative") difference in perception and understanding.
That an idiot lacks comprehension does not mean a genius is wrong--even when it comes to subjective things.
And art IS subjective, but that just means it is interpreted through the subject, rather than "objectively."  Who could imagine sterile, objective art?
This in no way precludes universality, however.

Best:
Morbid Angel
Darkthrone

Better:
Burzum
Deicide
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
Slayer
At the Gates
Emperor
Bathory

Good:
Immortal
Mayhem
Obituary
Metallica
Gorgoroth
Enslaved
Beherit
Megadeth
Sepultura
Celtic Frost/Hellhammer
Sodom
Immolation
Incantation
Suffocation
Death
Therion
Mercyful fate

Think thats about it. The reason I put Burzum in the better quality instead of best mainly because I don't think its a very good representation of Metal as whole and mainly I'm not realy into burzum that much anymore. I think too many people get on the varg bandwagon here.
