Metal / Re: What were the origins of death metal?

I dont really think you can pinpoint an exact origin of death metal. If you listen to bands like early morbid angel or death the music is really just aggressive thrash with harsh vocals. In my mind true death metal is something that for the most part leaves out the thrash tendencies , something like infester or morpheus descends. Death Metal only became what it was through a very gradual evolution, there was no one moment where all of a sudden death metal came into existence. However, I think that all death metal owes something to slayer for their use of atonal riffs and focus on aggression rather then melody.

just checked out the website above. I dont really trust anything that gives a CoF album 7.5 out of 10.

Know what really pisses me off about alot of metal magazines today also? They seem to give every release a high rating, which basicaly makes the ratings and reviews useless.

thats awsome (to the above)

I think that the best album art of all time is Altars of Madness. Nothing beats that.

Although I'm an agent of ZOG, I still always end up here.:P no other site has such well done reviews and respect for metal music. Every other website uses words like "sick" and "extreme brutality" and seems to review lots of christian metalcore and other brutal genres.

Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad

Good book. I found it really boring for the first twenty pages, but then it rolled well from that point on.

The reason I got into metal to begin with.

Suffocation-Human Waste, Effigy of the Forgotten
Morbid Angel-Altars of Madness
Morpheus Descends-Rituals of Infinity
Baphomet-The Dead Shall Inherit
the original Carcass covers
Autopsy-Severed survival

The album Art I picked here is based not only on its visual appeal, but how it represents the album. I'm sure lots of people find the art on the Baphomet cover, and mabey even the Morpheus and Autopsy albums cheezy or unprofessional, but they do capture the feel of the album. Dirty, raw, and just ugly.

The doom/death genre is a dumb thing because most death metal bands use doomy segments in their songs. Obituary, Morpheus Descends, Morbid Angel to name a few.

The film seemed a little repetitive.

Children of Bodom are bad, and thats not an oppinion its a fact. Their songs are just rehashed formulas of heavy metal, rock, and their newer stuff is almost starting to resemble scremo. Alot of people think that theirs no difference between technique and talent. Sure CoB can play their instruments very well, but their ability to write songs is trash.

Of all the bands I saw at this show (not including slayer of course), Mastodon was the best. However, the only thing that made them better then the other bands was that they were boring rather then obnoxious.

Lamb of God is a band that is an example of all that metal shouldn't be. The stage performance was embarrasing, with the vocalist jumping around the stage like it was a fucking hip hop concert, and letting out "signiture shrieks" that shrieked "nu-metal".

Slayer was good, they played:
south of heaven
war ensemble
mandatory suicide
dead skin mask
god hates us all
(some song from an early album)
reign in blood
angel of death

Last night I went to see Slayer play at the "unholy alliance tour". I'll say right now, it was pretty much 100 % bullshit. Lamb of God and Mastodon were the most horrible fucking bands I've ever heard. In fact, I felt like I was listening to Limp Bizkit or Desturbed, not metal.

I side with Euronymous.  Also the title "poetry in metal" sounds pretty rediculous, sometimes I feel that people take things a bit too seriously around here.
