Heathen was decent, everything else not so much though.

I've always found this song to be a great example of black metal.

It was OK.

More than ever, it seems our appreciation for this music (minimalistic black metal) is based on foreknowledge of it's concept and then we paint the picture ourselves with some harsh noise in the background.

Black metal really should be nothing more, nothing less.

You can analyze this shit to death but there's no point. It's obvious Belus isn't as good as the earlier Burzum albums. If you find it to be a good album regardless, that's completely reasonable. I like it myself. It's possible that Varg forgot what it takes to make a timeless album. It's possible that he's making music for his fans now and not himself, resulting in less personal music. I say we wait until the next album - maybe Varg will step up.

Houston man pretty much got it right.

To claim it's more punk/rock/indie than metal is a little ridiculous. The influences are all metal ones. Some of the songs are pretty hard hitting too. But besides the disagreement on the classification, I think we can all agree that it's not a worthwhile album.

At one point in my life I had to deal with a couple of aspies and they aren't people you really want leading. They're better off being used as human calculators - not a leader. Most valuable tools of society require understanding of other people - and aspies are social failures.

They certainly would benefit from a quality subwoofer - but they have more than enough low end on their own. Black metal and death metal from my experience benefit least from a subwoofer - and a lot of subwoofers aren't quick enough to accurately replicate double bass.

If this sound system is for music exclusively, ignore 5.1 systems or anything like that. Music is stereo, and should only be represented by 2 speakers and an optional subwoofer. Don't spend under $200, and unless you're made of money, don't spend more than 1k. My advice? Grab a pair of bookshelf speakers. Pick up something like the AudioEngine A5s and forget about it. The audiophile requires a lot of money, patience, and time.  And it's not worth worrying about. All you need is a good pair of bookshelf speakers and call it day. Chances are none of the music you listen to is well-produced enough to take advantage of an expensive sound system.

Agalloch's "The Mantle" or "Ashes Against The Grain". I've actually already downloaded and have given both a listen, and I don't think I've heard a band this boring in awhile. Am I wasting my time with this shit, or will it actually get better with repeated listens? Ashes Against the Grain sounds like alternative or possibly post-rock (where's the metal?) and The Mantle is an intimidating listen with it's rather long run time.

Awh, Fenriz is a Myspace kiddy. How cute.

City life breeds this activity like no other. I'm definitely considering moving up closer to the mountains over here in Western Washington.

Interzone / Re: Do we really need new bands and albums?!

This forum is really beginning to sound like a broken record. I'm pretty sure everyone here already knows about supporting the best and ignoring the crap (metal natural selection). So that leaves your comment about ignoring new bands. If you don't want to attempt to find something worthwhile, don't. You're better off waiting for trusted bands to release new content - and promoting these bands in the meantime. It's getting harder though, with Pink Frothy AIDS and Bloodbath fans growing in numbers.

Every single metal album I've heard from 2008

If those albums all suck, then we can still wait for the next Burzum album...in like 2020 or something.

Hasn't Varg had 10+ years to think up of some worthwhile material in prison? I was expecting an album within a few years of his release.

Interzone / Re: Wikipedia deletes ANUS, again

I haven't used Wikipedia very much but if you want this to work, you'll have to want to work with them. They shouldn't be able to keep the ANUS article deleted. If you're sick of it, contact the higher-ups at Wikipedia and have them lock it so no further changes can be made.

It's hardly necessary for a review. I think we're all fairly sure it'll turn out to be negative. The conclusion based on what I've read is that they aren't as good as built up to be by their fans. My two cents is that musically, they're decent. They manage to stand above the mediocrity of recent black metal, but they could have taken their music in a better direction. Their latest, Two Hunters, has excellent production and many mildly entertaining riffs. Cream of the black metal crop? No. But worth a listen if you're looking for more music.

I'm probably not the best one to be giving opinions (being new and all) but I've recently given this a listen. It as, someone would say, black metal just for the sake. Whoever composed the music clearly is a huge fan of the genre, but I don't think it's the right direction for him. A few of the songs off of Melancholie 2 (silly album name) are boring, and others are comprised of one catchy melody with filler. It has a unique atmosphere though, I'll give it that. If a more seasoned black metal fan would like to chip in their opinion, I'd like to hear it as well.
