 Sinners or victims?

 Convincing modern people that they are sinners is a big problem for Christian apologetics, and has been for many decades.

 Moderns are nihilists - they don't believe in the reality of reality - so they believe that sin is relativistic, and can be redefined-away.

 Why repent of a sin when that sin can be abolished by a change of law?

 *

 Modern people are encouraged by the culture to interpret their feelings of guilt as evidence of oppression - instead of recognizing themselves as sinners, dyed in the wool, they feel themselves to be victims.

 No matter what their own faults, no matter what their own imperfections, their bottom-line self-understanding is as a victim.

 It is not that they suppose themselves perfect, nor that they are immune from guilt - but that victimhood trumps guilt. 

 *

 This ultimate, existential self-definition as a victim goes right through modern society, from the most powerful person in the world to the most aggressively parasitic lowlife; and this status pretty much defines the secular-Christian divide.

 Self-defined victimhood is at the polar opposite of Christian humility.

Lichen are a very primitive fungi that's usually the first thing to begin evolving in an ecosystem. Demilich derives it's name not from a single thing, but a combination of "demi" (meaning to derive partly from) and "lich" (being the singular form of the word "lichen"). When you put the two together, you get something along the lines of something deviating from its own nature which is why the album cover has a bunch of subhuman-looking homunculii. Antti's vocal style, if you notice, is also very unearthly and weird which fits perfectly. The name of the song even fits this viewpoint. That's why this will always be one of my favorite albums; it vividly illustrates how much we as humans have willfully deviated from our true selves which has resulted in the weird and unnatural characteristics exhibited by many millions of people today. That's what this band was trying to say with this album, which is why Nespithe is so one-of-a-kind.

Seven Gates of Hell

In the 1800s a colossal mental asylum stood in the woods of York off Toad Road. This was a hellish place and the home of only the most deranged, most unfortunate souls. The asylum was many stories high and contained hundreds of rooms. Buried in the desolate Pennsylvania woods, it was viewed as the perfect place to ship the insane from all across the state.

 There was one major problem with this location, however; it was miles away from civiliztion. While viewed as a blessing by those who didn't want to face their fears, this also meant that the asylum was not easily accessible. This led to a great tragedy when it caught fire one day.

 Because of its remote locale, firefighters were unable to get there in time. Many of the patients burned to death in the upper floors of the building, and hundreds of others fled into the surrounding woods. The scene was true chaos�some of the most deranged and dangerous people in all Pennsylvania had disappeared into the woods as an inferno spread throughout the area.

 When officials finally put out the fire, they set out to capture all of the inmates. Scared by the reputations of the asylum's inmates and unsure of how to handle the situation, the search party was extraordinarily aggresive, beating into submission some of those they found and killing others.
