The Outsider by Colin Wilson: an existential exploration that cites its sources and asks the fundamental question -- why does our society keep producing outsiders, or people who see past the facade and can't help it, and is this a sign of doom or progress? (Literate Platonists know the answer, of course. Onde Aander sent this one in.)

This seemed neat, so I started a thread for it. I'm sure there are others which are worth exploring, but right now I'm reading utter crap and loving it (Red Storm Rising).

I'm reading this book right now.  I'm not very well versed in Plato, so what would the Literate Platonist say?  Doom or progress?

the album has a structurally mechanical feel that is wildly at odds with the basically organic atmosphere they clearly seek to evoke.

wow, I see exactly what you're saying.  you explained that well.

Father Befouled seemed to get quite the glowing review, but not good enough to make the best of the year?

EDIT:  I take that back.  I re-read the review and I see your fundamental criticism of the album.

Lean times are good for "higher types."  Easier to seize power.

I suppose Asphyx would be Death metal with a doom influence, then?

Preparations are being made for the yet untitled second full-length album (the follow up to "Profanatitas De Domonatia") to be ejaculated in 2009 via Hells Headbangers Records on CD, LP, and Picture LP formats. Half of the album has already been written, expect a masterpiece. Watch this page for an announced release date.

Metal / Re: The importance of self-distance in art

they took life seriously, they took their art seriously, they DID NOT take THEMSELVES seriously.  they understood themselves IN RELATION to the rest of the world.  and the only way to understand yourself in relation to the whole, is to have "self-distance."

and the above post ^^^ is awesome, by the way.

I assume you were also the only metalheads you knew in those programs as well. I would like people that were in gifted classes to say how many other metalheads were in their classes. This should disprove these stupid studies.

I don't really remember ANY of my schoolmates to be metalheads, gifted or otherwise.

I was.  starting in like 3rd/4th grade, myself and about 8 other students would do separate things from the rest of the class from time to time.  it wasn't exactly some extensive program, though.  it was called TAG - talented and gifted - hurray for me!

DMBM - where did you go to check that current list?  I have a few CDs I'd like to send.
