It's not the complexity of the theory that's at issue, it's that fact that it's needed at all.  Beethoven requires no familiarity with theory for a listener to grasp: serial music demands both an understanding of the underlying musical practice and of its ideological motivations to be clearly understood, which is why it was, is and will remain purely academic music for pretentious insiders.

Why is the theory needed for serialist music? I feel emotions when I listen to the serialist compositions just as when I hear the works by the romantics. Whether or not I understand the motivation of the composers or the musical idioms in which they worked one can still feel the emotions of their music. When I listen to Schoenberg I almost never understand what is going on, the theoretical parts are extremely difficult to follow yet I still do listen to and enjoy his music. Schoenberg has even stated that he does not want people to analyze his music while they are listening but simply to listen. His music has a soul and spirit, it is not just a dry mechanical construct created for self-important individuals.

Sure, there is not only one set of rules for the composition of beautiful music. That is no reason to fall for any kind of relativism, though. Some rules --maybe it is better to call them anti-rules-- only serve to prevent beauty. These are unnatural.

Not all music is meant to be beautiful. Is Gorguts beautiful? Is Havohej beautiful? I enjoy the music of Schoenberg, Xenakis and Messiaen. Beauty may not be a word that springs to mind when one thinks of the works of these men but they have qualities that I enjoy that simply are not found in Bach or Beethoven.

Music is beautiful as long as you follow correct rules, which "traditional" composers did. These rules are not arbitrary, they are natural. This is so because beauty, not chaos, is natural.

The 'rules' of music are only designed and created in order to achieve a particular end. If your desired emotional destination is on such a different wavelength then another then the 'rules' will naturally be markedly different in order to achieve this end. If one considers Indian classical music it operates in such a different fashion from western classical music that knowledge in western musical theories are unimportant or even useless if one were to write Indian classical music.

I did not think the article criticised serialist music at all. It simply seemed to say that the structures and patterns of serialist compositions are less observable to the ear than classical music of older traditions. I did not detect any judgment of the value of serial music in the article.

Bach, Mozart and Beethoven were all renowned improvisers in performance.  This is common knowledge, please elaborate on your previous statement otherwise you're just talking crap.

Most classical composers write music the same way an artist of any other genre does, one step at a time. Only those of truly great mental capacity have the ability to improvise a piece, write it down afterwards and publish it. These composers are the exception to the rule. Most classical composers do not improvise or at least do not improvise pieces that they then consider complete enough to publish without change.

Writing classical music is not inherently an improvised affair. What I meant by my previous statement was that if the writing of classical music under any circumstances is an act of improvisation than it would be true for any form of music.

Umm, yes it has.  Anyone who can play a classical instrument and understands classical theory can improvise in a classical style, how do you think most composers write music?

How do you think a metal or rock artist writes music? If you are implying that the act of writing classical music is a form of improvisation than that would also go for the creation of any kind of music.

Diatonic tonality is not the same thing as modal tonality.

I was only speaking of the clause that most metal is keyless, I mentioned nothing about scales. Every scale has a tonal centre and thus a key signature and with the exception of American death metal which tends to be atonal or at the least chromatic most metal that I have heard will employ a variety of scales even if they are not a modal scale.

The difference between jazz and classical music can sometimes be simply a matter of emphasis. Jazz is a very broad genre that ranges in styles to a truly great degree. I have heard Chopin played in a jazz style and it was no longer classical music, it was jazz and it still kept all the complexity of Chopin's music. I have heard pieces by Bach played in jazz styles that were indeed jazz pieces that kept all of the complexities of his music. Rather than thinking of them as classical pieces played in a jazz style they could be better thought of as jazz pieces that imitate classical music but are jazz through and through. This can also apply to improvisation. Jazz improvisation need not be simple or unstructured; it all depends on the style of jazz and the performer.

People hear talk about Jazz in terms of absolutes. It is not possible for jazz to ever be as complex as classical music. It is impossible for jazz improvisation to be as complex as that of classical music. Many Jazz pieces are not as complex as many classical pieces and vice versa but we are talking about the possibilities of jazz as a genre and it is indeed possible if the composer is willing and able to write jazz as complicated as any classical piece ever written and this goes also for improvisation. 

Just a note on the opening post, improvisation has not existed in classical music for a thousand years.

A) most metal is keyless music with no understanding of diatonic harmony.

I have yet to hear a black metal song which is atonal. Even when it comes to death metal most songs have a tonal centre. It seems to be only in the American and Tech Death bands that atonality is present.

Problems I have with this:

1) The first feat while impressive is certainly not unheard of in the modern world. Any special forces unit from practically any modern nation could accomplish such a feat and would indeed be expected to. In fact I would imagine such a feat could be accomplished by even the regular army in many countries.

2) The boats and number of rowers and even types of oars (not to mention the sails) are very different from that of modern day vessels which defeats the point of comparison.

3) What is the weight of the modern Olympic Javelin compared to the wooden spear?  Where does this figure for the Aboriginal spear throw come from? Was this an isolated incident or an average amoung many thousands of recorded throws? If it was just one throw what were the conditions, what kind of wood was it etc?

Change is not a requirement, but when you just start repeating yourself, as in there is no growth and no new ideas to express then it is just pointless and redundant.  Its like the black metal scene today, there are TONS of bands doing the exact same thing that the early bands were doing, the only difference is that they are only repeating things that have already been said.  Sometimes repetition is necessary for someone to get an idea, but if it continues long after its understood then it just gets fucking annoying.

I do not think it matters if what you said has been said before, only that what you say is great. If a modern black metal outfit released an album the equal of 'Hvis Lyset Tar Oss' in both quality and aesthetic I would not denounce it as nothing more than an idea said almost twenty years ago, I would praise the album as being the equal of 'Hvis Lyset Tar Oss'. What makes music powerful is the feelings it brings forth in man and not the year in which it was written.

Having heard the entire album I must say I was more than disappointed. The album is an abomination beyond all imaginings when one considers it came under the name Gorgoroth. It is metalcore, no attempt is even made to hide the fact.

Having enjoyed all of Berheit’s albums and the odd demo I downloaded a split they did with Archgoat (which is actually an EP from each band stuck together) and I thought that while Archgoat were not the most amazing thing to ever hit my ears this kind of music deserved further investigation. I have been wondering what other Finnish black metal bands are worth listening to? I have head the name Impaled Nazarene tossed around, what albums (if any) would be a worthwhile listen? Also I have learnt of the band Belial, do they have merit? Of course feel free to suggest other prominent or important bands of this style (perhaps even if they are not from Finland) or just Finnish black metal bands in general. I would prefer to listen to bands that more than three people have heard of and did not make their only release from a garage. Hopefully that will be a safeguard from a flood of completely obscure bands.
