Metal / Pantera Riffs
« on: April 28, 2010, 06:00:39 AM »
New stuff is full of Pantera riffs though!

Early on, Pantera ripped off Judas Priest a lot. That makes it difficult to avoid possible comparison to "Pantera riffs" anywhere you go in metal, however "obscura".

Mostly, Pantera are known as image-heavy, idiotic constructors of songs lacking even minor contribution to the values and architecture of the genre - we don't mind the riffs.

Metal / Finnish archaic, ritual and ambient musicians
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:58:42 PM »
Right now I am surrounded by the thick snows of southern Finland, mesmerized by the cold glare of the stars amidst these frozen firs. In the ancient times, shamans and witches summoned the dark spirits of nature using their legendary songcraft, preserved in poetry. Of the battles between the tribes and their quests for truth and valor, tales passed on through tradition from father to son.

To share with you all some of the current Finnish voices still in touch with the archaic ambience of this strange land.

Nostatus uses the legendary instrument kantele of the folk hero Väinämöinen to enshroud both melancholy and heroic thoughts in an eloquent, elven shine that is very authentic but far from academic, boring ethnomusic.

Tervahäät conjures images of stark old Finnish literature and theatre, the baleful life in the countryside, the joyless faith and eerie memories of abandoned huts by its minimalistic mixture of folk, classical and ritual musics.

Influential and harsh, Tiermes was formed by members of black doom entity Unholy to explore the hidden trances of darkness of the Lappish shamans by the means of philosophy and psychoactive substances.

The neo-classical slowly drifting but extremely beautiful compositional landscape of Winter Gardens brings to mind diverse radical conservative acts such as Lord Wind and Von Thronstahl.

The premier cosmic band of Finland, Zoät-Aon unites the archaic and the futuristic in a Shivan dance of dreamy frequencies akin both to old Klaus Schulze and newer dark ambient such as Lustmord.

Metal / THE MEANING OF METAL study online
« on: January 04, 2010, 07:35:39 AM »
Please contribute, so that someone else besides Pantera and Linkin Park fans get represented.

Quote
The original inspiration for this study spurs from the fact that the general public traditionally seems to have prejudice toward Metal music and its participants, easily categorizing Metal fans and musicians as a very homogenous group. Despite the fact that Metal music and its (sub)culture have been part of culture for over 30 years, post-doc studies on metal music and culture – especially in Finland – have been few and often narrowly focused. Moreover, the preliminary approach for research on Metal has often been to study a causal relationship between metal music and some sociological or psychological problem, or investigate the extreme aspects of the music and its culture; research examining any potential positive aspects of metal barely exist. By conducting this study, we hope to demonstrate that people who participate in the culture of Metal - whether as fans, artists or in any other role - should not be categorized on any other basis than their common interest in metal music and the culture related to it. People from all walks of life listen to the music and participate in other activities that express their interest in and passion for this once marginal genre of music. As a result of this study, we expect to demythologize some of the most common stereotypes people have about Metal and its culture and broaden the academic and public discourse on Metal, its meaning to its fans and artists, and its potential influences on people in general. The primary data in this study consists of questionnaires and interviews of the various participants of Metal culture, for example artists, fans and event organizers. The research results should introduce significant new insights to the study of metal as part of contemporary culture and hopefully, promote a better understanding of Metal and its participants to a worldwide audience.   Please check the links below to find out more information on the project.

Finally, if you leave the site now, please come back again and participate in the study by filling out the questionnaire.

Yours in Metal,
Members of the Meaning of Metal Research Group

Metal / RYAN BARTEK road book “THE BIG SHINY PRISON” as FREE PDF

Insane or illuminated? With coverage of underground from black metal to raves, Stalaggh to Barack Obama, who can tell?

Quote
http://www.mediafire.com/?bxmozxt4jom

Above is the FREE PDF download link to Ryan Bartek’s long-anticipated road
book/music journalism expose “THE BIG SHINY PRISON,” covering all forms of
extreme metal, punk, industrial, experimental, rock, electronic, psychedelia,
etc.

This book is packed with interviews – from Brutal Truth to Millions of Dead
Cops, Impaled to DWARVES, Repulsion to Cephalic Carnage. AxCx to Pig Destroyer,
Kylesa to STALAGGH, Genghis Tron to Abysmal Dawn & beyond. Even USA President
Barack Obama makes the most bizarre appearance of his entire career. Yet that’s
just scraping the surface & below you will find a comprehensive list of
appearances.

The following statement comes directly from the author: “My name is Ryan Bartek.
For the past 3 years I’ve sacrificed everything for the successful completion of
this project. I spent a year on the road, another year completing & shopping it,
and another year of total rejection. It is only karmically fitting that both the
demise of magazine & book publishing come in one fell swoop.

I was never in it for the money, nor the aspect of celebrity. I have spent an
upwards of $10,000 on it, which I remark only to underline my absolute
sincerity. No one would deny its quality -- but the raw nature of the work, as
well as its excessive length, made it impossible to pigeon hole or successfully
shop. Nothing quite like it has ever surfaced, at least not in the format I’ve
undertaken.

After this seemingly endless struggle, I have decided to offer it to the public
domain. While I retain the copyright/trademark, I both encourage and support
file sharing. It is my only wish that this manuscript be circulated &
appreciated. Perhaps when all is said and done, someone might offer a physical
print run.

“THE BIG SHINY PRISON” can be downloaded at the following link: http://www.mediafire.com/?bxmozxt4jom

If you cannot view a PDF file, either I or June Mansfield from Anomie PR will resend it as an MS Word Document or RTF File upon request.

If anyone wishes to circulate this PDF to their contacts, I hereby give full
permission. If anyone runs a zine or label and wants to post the PDF on your
site, I also endorse this action.

The HTML embed code for the book is: http://www.mediafire.com/?bxmozxt4jom

If anyone should so kindly post this announcement on their news blog, review the book, or send interview questions, I’d also be much appreciative.

Since there is no “official release” slated as of yet, the “time-sensitive”
aspect of promotion is rendered moot (i.e. whenever you feel like getting around
to it).

Also available for download are the front cover and promotional logo.

I wrote this book to prove that no answer is ever “the answer,” and that all of
us – no matter our vocation – are part of something larger then we might ever
consider. “THE BIG SHINY PRISON” is my ultimate thesis.

Readers may be horrifically alienated/insulted by the views of some in this
book. I endorse none but my own, and I think it’s fairly obvious where I stand.
Anyone who knows me well enough realize that if I “explain the joke” then the
jokes not funny. In “BSP,” I am relegated to the status of a ping-pong ball
gathering information. I am a clown, land pyrate & gutter philosopher – nothing
more.”

That much said, welcome to “THE BIG SHINY PRISON.”

Cordially,
Dr. Ryan Bartek

PRAISE FOR RYAN BARTEK’S “THE SILENT BURNING” (2005)

“One of the most interesting, and perhaps honest, books of the last decade." --
1340MAG.com

“This deeply personal memoir, one of many, as well as his views on racism,
abortion, and drugs speak volumes about Bartek’s ability to analyze society from
the perspective of someone who isn’t from the privileged class. From his
disadvantageous upbringing, he has developed a brutal style of analysis,
buttressed by an in-depth knowledge about innumerable subjects, qualifying him
to speak for his generation… An opus that would send Freud to the asylum, if not
straight to hell.” –The Satanic Inquisition

“In many ways, ‘The Silent Burning’ reads like a counter-culture manifesto, an
underground guide to the rebellion. Paranoia, anger and self-preservation guide
Ryan Bartek’s decrees, which he operates in the same clobbering, sarcastic vein
of Kerouac as he does Chuck D. Bartek rants to his hearts content, and his heart
is blackened like the underbelly of hell.” - PIT Magazine

“The reader is a visitor at his or her own risk; Bartek slams you upon entering
and like the ball in a pinball machine you are flicked aggressively from
heartrending childhood story to barely coherent hate filled manifesto to
disjointed poem to intelligently articulated commentary… This book is for those
who are simmering with the anger of repression and persecution, and for those
who want to understand them without judging. It also touches those of us who
maintain a less hostile attitude towards society, but are just as disgusted with
the mainstream version of reality.”
–Clamor Magazine

“Bartek’s voice isn’t gentle, easy, or subtle. ‘The Silent Burning’ is a
postmodern polemic, a schizophrenic society, and an hyper charged imagination
reflected in a funhouse mirror, populated by a narrator looking for something
approaching understanding, but finding a head-on-collision with the world
instead. ‘The Silent Burning’ is what you’d get if you had a literary cage
grudge match to the death between Henry Miller, Lautreamont, Louis-Ferdinand
Celine, and Kathy Acker. You’re left with blood on the floor and screams ringing
in your ears- but also a great deal of truth, if you can stand to look at it.”
–JAM RAG

“I was incredibly moved by this work. A very brave piece on Bartek’s part, as it
attacks the mass media and our society in such an honest and straight forward
fashion, that it would be practically impossible for any major publishing house
to push the book without cutting half of it completely out… His words swell like
flames on the underbelly of the American lie… Hands down, this is one of the
most important readings of the 21st Century. Practically functioning as a
bi-polar survival guide for anyone that operates outside of the ‘norm,’ and a
must-have for all that find themselves active in the underground.”
–Solution13.net

“Bartek’s writing is like a welding of Alan Ginsberg and Bukowski...
Inflammatory...” – Outsight Radio

“Written from a bi-polar viewpoint, ‘The Silent Burning’ encompasses everything
we as a society find obscene, distasteful and just plain wrong. Follow me here -
a book written during the height of a manic depressives worst battles, a book
written at the lowest point of one mans bipolar syndrome, a book written during
the recovery process -- all put in words and written as self-therapy.”
–TVTRANZMISSION.com

“Comprised largely of fragments written in a variety of different styles,
Bartek’s predominant form is the rant – the preferred mode of lunatics,
psychotics, drug fiends, and confused angsty teens. He aims his gun at the usual
targets – television, racism, organized religion, conservatives, liberals,
rednecks, freaks, junkies, yuppies, rapists, pro-lifers and losers – beneath
sectional subheadings such as ‘Bob Saget Raping the Olson Twins on PCP;’ a
ranting that is by its very nature as inconsistent as it is somehow endearing in
its callousness… While there is a lot wrong with this book, not the least of
which is the author’s self-diagnosis masquerading as a climax – a bit too
pathetically American for my tastes – what pisses me off most of all is the fact
that it’s barely available…” -The Prague Literary Journal

”A Misanthropik Monument of Hatred, Pain, and Disgust.” –STALAGGH

Metal / Two new TRIPTYKON tracks at Myspace
« on: December 10, 2009, 07:29:10 PM »
Quote
Triptykon, the group formed by Tom Gabriel Warrior after his departure from Celtic Frost in April of 2008, is scheduled to commence studio recording sessions for a first album in mid-August 2009. The album, tentatively titled Eparistera Daimones, will mainly be recorded in southern Germany. with additional recording sessions to take place in Switzerland. Produced by Warrior and Triptykon guitarist V. Santura, the recording and mixing sessions are expected to continue until November 2009. The album is currently scheduled for release in spring of 2010, through the group’s own label, Prowling Death Records (home of Hellhammer and Celtic Frost).

Triptykon was created specifically to continue and further evolve the darkness invoked by its immediate precursors, seminal black/extreme metal pioneers Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. Accordingly, Triptykon's first album is a persistent development of the virulent and towering musical darkness perpetuated not only by Warrior's early work but also within his extensive contributions to Celtic Frost's highly acclaimed Monotheist album. As expected, a significant part of the music on the album consists of material written by Warrior during the past few years and originally intended for Monotheist's successor. This is balanced by new, original music written by Warrior and Santura since Triptykon's inception.

Although the group has so far proceeded in virtual concealment, the music for Eparistera Daimones has been described as akin to a bleak, black ocean of heaviness, accentuated by moments of unexpected grace. Songs currently under consideration for inclusion on Triptykon's debut album are, among others, "Myopic Empire", "Among Veiled Spirits", "Sepultus", "Abyss Within My Soul", "Goetia", "A Thousand Lies", and the 17-minute "The Prolonging".

Triptykon will follow the release of Eparistera Daimones with a number of festival appearances and a full tour. The group’s onstage debut is scheduled to take place as part of the renowned Roadburn Festival, in April 2010.

http://www.myspace.com/triptykonofficial

None of the three tracks make me go screaming out of the door and try converting passersby into the gospel of Triptykon, but the range of styles on display is curious.

"Abyss Within My Soul" contains traces of Winter and St. Vitus, "A Thousand Lies" vents frustration like Master had discovered modern groove metal, while "Crucifixus" is a satanic mass performed by 70's German krautrock improvisers.

I just think if you are just true to yourself and learn how to tap into your inner feelings and express them with music, it's there. I just don't think everybody looks at music from their soul, but when you do everything just falls into place. There were many bands that I really felt a connection with musically, but two of them that really tapped into my darker side were when I first heard NECROVORE, and also the first time I saw MORBID ANGEL play live back in 1988. That live experience really helped me develop as a songwriter.

Metal / MASTER'S HAMMER demos and new album samples online
« on: December 05, 2009, 11:58:12 AM »
Quote
For sentimental reasons, it's time to publish all Master's Hammer demos playable for free on one page, in synoptic order. The sound of old tapes and cassettes has been meticulously cleaned on computer, but no additional effects were applied. You can hear alot of noise due to then recording technique and budget. Apart from musicians' effort, the audio & image restoration took us several months, so please, don't abuse anything from here.
Listen to all songs in almost CD-quality flash player, print images freely, skilled ones can grab files to burn a CD for their own personal pleasure, why not - play it loud, but don't sell it. However, you even don't have to spend single penny for a blank CD, just bookmark this page, play and watch it anytime.

In future, we are able to prepare a collector's edition of demos as a nice digipack or deluxe vinyl edition, but not until at least 300 subscribers will place their pre-order.

http://www.mastershammer.com/demos.htm

If anyone had a problem getting into the operetta metal of "The Jilemnice Occultist" before, I urge you to check out the more atmospheric demo version.

A new Master's Hammer album has also been recently released:

Quote
The new album of Master's Hammer is out now. It comes fourteen years after the last, rather experimental "Šlágry", and seventeen years after the last blacketal operetta "Jilemnický Okultista". Today, we're likely going to capture an attention of another generation of fans. Nevertheless, our aim was to have fun (adequately to our age) and to use proven blackmetal methods to express ourselves. Mantra is in many eastern religions a synonymum for "word of truth". I wrote these songs after real stories and feelings taken from countrysides we partly live in, namely Southern Bohemia and India.
Hence the subtitle "Countryside Operetta". -fš-

Maybe someone who is into Suffocation big time should explain to us why the band is more popular than Morpheus Descends, Incantation and Immolation combined. To me it seems they are stuck in some kind of street credible, "brutal" attitude.
