The above is somewhat confirmed by the last ditch proposal by Republicans to delay Obamacare for one year. This is an entirely political move by a party that is utterly disconnected from its base, and probably doesnt even relate to them anymore.

Interzone / Your Morals: A Quiz!
« on: October 01, 2013, 12:54:50 AM »
By now I hope a lot of you are all familiar with the work of Jonathan Haidt in moral psychology. For those unfamiliar, he is the author of an excellent book on the underlying differences between Liberal and Conservative approaches to morality. With academic and scientific rigour, The Righteous Mind is probably at least as significant as The Bell Curve and is a must read. The data for the research that led to the book was drawn from a number of sources, but a big one was an online questionnaire. I thought it might be interesting to try it out and post our scores, maybe metalheads show some kind of trend? I will post mine later once we get one or two going.

The website does not ask for e-mail confirmation, though it does require registration. There are a number of tests on the site for those who wish to explore this more deeply, the one I am talking about is the first one in the list. The fundamental assertion is that morality consists of a number of moral foundations (five or six) and that Liberals favour harm/care and fairness over the others (loyalty, authority, purity) with Conservatives showing more of a balance.

It seems more to me that it will be seen as an opportunistic, purely Machiavellian move. There is a degree of truth to this. The Republican party as it is cannot hope to attract young Americans to any significant extent no matter their political persuasion.

Can the front page have summaries not the full posts?

Instead of this, would it be feasible to put youtube embeds after a jump to the article? Sometimes the frontpage can get a bit clogged up and flash leaking (on Firefox at least ) slows it down.

Also I seem to be unable to make comments on articles after a rather innocuous one I posted (a link to a metal archives review) disappeared. I hope this isnt some kind of punitive censure, that would suck.

Too much `masculinity` by this definition, too much task orientation, is literally Aspergers (per Simon Baron Cohen). For this reason I find it to be a little simplistic when extended to things like music.

That is actually not terrible, I get the feeling its going to be a lot of speedy chromatic drudgery once I check out the full album, but thanks for the links (even if it is promotional).

Indeed it is quite a contrast. What is supposed to be music of substance dissolves into worthless academic garbage and noise, while what is supposed to be the crazy rants of young adults can be sublime. A total inversion and a sign of the times.

I had to link this performance of Vilayat Khan playing Raga Darbari Kannada. A rivalry of sorts had been established in the media between Ravi Shankar and Vilayat Khan, though I am doubtful of its validity. I do not doubt however that Vilayat Khan would have held Ravi Shankar`s worth in rather low esteem. This is inevitable, as it is rather low quality compared to Vilayat Khan`s work, and despite its overwhelming virtuosity fails to produce something musically profound.

Thanks, I enjoyed the Neurosis album you recommended in a different thread so I will definitely check out El Mundo Frio. I have listened to ...and Man will become the hunted by Grief which was bad. If you have heard that, how does it compare to Come to?

Downloaded from the box.com link, seems excellent, no hassle, no waiting, no popups, good download speed.

The vocals are in a too low tone, the guitars are impossible to hear, the drums are just "tah tah tah".

How can someone like it?

It just takes time my friend. Once you develop an ear for it you will have no problem deciphering it. I would ignore Nile and work on Suffocation though. I found Pierced from Within easier to listen to initially. Pierced -> Effigy -> Breeding would probably be a good progression. Invest in some decent (not necessarily expensive) headphones if you have not already, because you have to play it fairly loudly for it to not sound like mush and that is not very fair on the people around you.

Sounds like someone needs to sit down with the first Incantation for a week or two in a dark room.
